Looking for a Senior/Principal Design Engineer with civil/structural temporary works design experience to develop a temporary works team in the Welsh office for a national civil engineering main contractor. Working on civil structural projects largely in the rail industry such as: bridges, culverts, platforms, stations, tunnels, serving long term frameworks. Excellent opportunity for senior or principal engineer to develop, mentor and grow their own team.
Working for a civil engineering main contractor & engineering services company with a turnover in excess of £300m which works across the UK, the company’s strength is under pinned by 36 separate framework agreements with 12 different customers. Working on renewal and refurbishment of key assets across rail, energy, environmental & infrastructure.
The Temporary Works team will be working alongside a permanent works team which is already in place and so the infrastructure and know how is already in place.
Job Summary:
As a Principal Design Engineer, you will play a key role in developing technical Temporary Works solutions for a portfolio of engineering projects and frameworks throughout rail and non-rail infrastructure maintenance and improvement works. You will be involved in shaping and developing the temporary works design team in Wales and deliver high-quality designs.
This is a lead role within the In‐house Design Team, responsible for the technical aspects of engineering projects in addition to programming, resource allocation, budgetary control, managing customer satisfaction, reviews, coaching and recruitment. As Principal Design Engineer, your day to day role will include:
- Provide definitive technical guidance and leadership on engineering solutions
- Lead the resolution of any compliances with CDM Regulations.
- Define the brief, enabling the progression of innovative development of unambiguous engineering solutions from feasibility through to detailed design.
- Lead the development of design philosophies of engineering solutions, ensuring appropriate documentation is in place.
- Hold the CRE (Design) role on Network Rail schemes, over a varied range of projects including multi‐disciplinary schemes.
- Check and approve design deliverables, including Designer’s Risk Assessments and Decision Logs.
- Be the lead representative at meetings with internal and/or external Clients and Stakeholders.
- Ensure work is delivered within the team’s financial, quality and programme targets
- Provide strong leadership and motivation of teams, carrying out scheduled performance and development reviews for direct reports
- Mentor and coach team members, and input in to succession planning.
- Keep Clients informed of costs or implications of change in a timely manner, and address any Queries / disputes which may arise.
- Assist the Head of Design in the management of the department
Requirements
To excel in this role, you will have previous experience as a Senior / Principal Design Engineer for Temporary Works, ideally with previous rail experience but would still be interested in people with civil/structural backgrounds.
- Minimum IEng/CEng level of education _ (working towards will be considered for the right candidate)
- Chartered Member of a relevant Professional Body. (e.g. ICE / IStructE)
- Civil engineering project design experience – i.e. bridges, structures, tunnels, stations, platforms etc.
- Significant experience in technical design for civils associated Temporary Works
- Candidates from a rail or civil & structural engineering design background with experience in client, contractor or consultancy organisations will be considered.
