The Opportunity

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) is looking for an experienced CCS Engineer to join its specialist Control, Command & Signalling team.

You'll work as part of a 12-person CCS team, collaborating with Network Rail, designers, contractors and other industry partners.

This is a technically interesting role for an engineer who understands the operational railway and how signalling and CCS work within it, and wants to apply that experience across a much broader range of industry challenges.

The role covers conventional signalling, digital signalling including ETCS, technical standards, research and innovation. You'll contribute to projects that help shape how signalling is developed and implemented across the UK railway. Open to people with or without ETCS experience but must have conventional Signalling experience.

You will report to a Principal CCS Engineer and work collaboratively with colleagues across RSSB and the wider rail industry.

The Role

• Work collaboratively within the CCS team on a range of technical projects and initiatives.
• Contribute to the development, review and improvement of signalling and CCS standards.
• Work with Rail Client organisation (Network Rail, TFL etc) , designers, contractors and other industry partners to understand technical challenges.
• Provide technical input into digital signalling and ETCS projects as well as conventional signalling.
• Support research projects investigating new and emerging railway technologies.
• Help translate research and technical developments into practical guidance for the rail industry.
• Review existing standards and contribute to the development of new standards and technical guidance.
• Participate in technical meetings, workshops and industry working groups.
• Assess technical proposals and provide practical engineering input.
• Consider how new technologies interact with existing railway systems and infrastructure.
• Prepare technical reports, papers, guidance and supporting documentation.
• Work with specialist colleagues across RSSB and contribute knowledge from your own engineering experience.
• Build effective relationships with technical specialists and industry partners.
• Identify technical risks, issues and opportunities for improvement.
• Keep up to date with developments in signalling, CCS&C, ETCS and emerging railway technologies.
• Support Principal Engineers on more complex technical issues where appropriate.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced railway signalling engineer with a strong understanding of both signalling technology and the operational railway.

You don't need to have worked in a standards environment. A background with Network Rail, TFL, a signalling contractor, designer, consultancy or another rail organisation could provide an excellent foundation.

Open to a range of candidates could include Signalling Asset Engineering, Signalling Engineering, Design, Project Engineering, Technical Assurance, Systems Engineering or Control & Command.

We're looking for someone who can:

• Understand how signalling and CCS interact with train operations, infrastructure, safety and other railway disciplines.
• Understand the practical impact of technical decisions on railway operations and asset performance.
• Apply sound engineering judgement to complex technical problems and develop practical solutions.
• Work collaboratively across different technical disciplines and organisations.
• Communicate technical issues clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Engage confidently with Network Rail, designers, contractors and other industry partners.
• Ideally bring experience of both conventional signalling and some exposure to digital signalling or ETCS – will consider people with just conventional signalling experience.
• Have an interest in research, innovation and the development of new railway technologies.
