- Senior Health & Safety Advisor is required workingwithin the Client Organisation responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK this is a multi-billion-pound high-speed railway to directly link the city centres of: London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. The role is working on site in Coleshill on the civil engineering main works contract (Balfour Vinci JV) which is a multi-billion-pound Main Civil Works Programme on Phase 1 includes: cuttings, bulk earthworks, bridges, viaducts, geotechnical, tunnelling.
The Senior Health & Safety Advisor role is responsible for assisting the QHSSE Compliance Manager and Head of HSE in ensuring HS2’s quality, health, safety, security and environmental management standards are met within Balfour Vinci JV main civil works programme, by both HS2 and the Supply Chain. The role is also responsible for role modelling and embedding the ‘Safe at heart’ culture across development and delivery. They are in civils delivery phase of the programme and the key focus of the role is to ensure compliance of Health & Safety operational assurance. Although Quality, Environmental & Security will also be checked for compliance.
Working Relationship – Co-located
The client team are working alongside the main contractor (Co-located) in the same site offices, the role requires individuals with the correct behaviours – collaboration, engagement, stakeholder management skills who are able to drive the best from the relationship, pick up on problems as they arrive and resolve quickly rather than waiting and reviewing once the problem has manifested.
Role is site office based from Coleshill coupled with Hybrid working – expectation is to work 3-4 days a week from the site office and the rest of the time at home.
Salary
Coleshill, Birmingham £50 – 52,152.50 + pen(6:12) + 25 days - FTC
The contract will be a 12-month rolling Fixed Term Contract (FTC) – the Civil programme has another 4/5 years left to run the opportunities for future progression are huge and the next promotional move QHSSE Compliance Manager pays £70k + pkg (permanent role).
Duties & Responsibilities
- To be accountable for role modelling and embedding ‘Safe at Heart’ culture and ways of working throughout delivery.
- To be responsible for supporting risk-based Quality, Health, Safety, Security and Environment operational assurance within the development and delivery areas.
- To be accountable for assisting the QHSSE Compliance Manager in overseeing and ensuring compliance to centrally defined Safety and Assurance processes and policies across: Quality / Occupational Health / Safety / Security / Environmental Management
- To be responsible for supporting the investigation of Health, Safety, Security and Environment incidents within delivery areas.
- To be accountable for assisting in the provision of Safety and Assurance services to support development & delivery teams.
- Actively promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
Looking for:
The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of all aspects of health on safety on large construction/infrastructure sites with a minimum qualification of a NEBOSH General Certificate additional experience within quality, environmental & security is also helpful. Background will be either client organisation or Tier 1 civil engineering main contractors and have a knowledge of range of assurance activities. You will have experience working on major civils / infrastructure projects – rail, highways, utilities, tunnelling, major structures etc Coupled with strong stakeholder management & communication skills all required whilst working in a collaborative environment – working in similar alliance / collaborative arrangements will also be beneficial.

- Planning and organising – Able to prioritise and manage own workload.
- IT proficiency (e.g. Microsoft Office).
- Ability to assist with the production and review of technical reports including assurance and investigation reports and interface with staff across all levels of the project.
Knowledge:
- All aspects of health and safety, including occupational health, health and safety elements of the Works Information, security policies/procedures/processes and Environment Management policies, procedures and processes.
- Knowledge of range of assurance activities, tools, techniques and their application.
Type of experience:
- Experience of assisting with the delivery of assurance across a major programme, or a complex organisation, with multiple stakeholders
- Experience in being part of a multi-disciplinary Quality or Health & Safety team
- Experience of contributing to and review of investigations.
- A professional qualification in Health and Safety or able to demonstrate the equivalent experience.
