Description

Are you a Senior Engineer with System Integration Understanding & good understanding of railway operations with a track record of solving complex engineering issues on railway infrastructure?   If you are interested in leaving a lasting engineering legacy by resolving complex novel challenges this role could be for you.

Senior Systemwide Engineer is required to work for the Client Organisation (High Speed Two Ltd) responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK..  The Systemwide Engineer role is a unique role within HS2, which, looks to manage and resolve novel and complex critical risk engineering challenges on HS2.  HS2 has many novel systems which are being implemented for the first time – these engineering challenges often branch across multiple contracts with complex integration issues and from lesson learnt from Crossrail – HS2 are taking control of these in a special engineering department – Systemwide Engineer working within the System Integration department of the Chief Engineer’s group.

Working on Phase 1 of the project, which, is valued c£60 billion has 10 years left to run and the Systemwide Engineer team & indeed the wider system integration department will be required to work to the very end & likely into service, excellent opportunities for development and progression.

Job overview

Manage and deliver targeted and strategic multidisciplinary systemwide engineering projects to resolve key railway level integration challenges considering all technical, operation, cost, affordability and programme constraints. Delivery of this role will provide a critical contribution to ensuring the correct HS2 operational railway is delivered. through providing clarity and ensuring stakeholder consensus in system level solutions and contributions required from each sub-system.

The Senior Engineer will lead small teams of specialist engineers to come together in sprints to resolve these challenges, gain consensus from the stakeholders (End users, future operators, standard authority etc) and take these recommendations to the endorsement panels.  They will see the engineering challenge through the lifecycle from concept solution, requirements gathering & definition, work on designs, solve integration, attend lab site test through to successful delivery.

Example of the Novel Engineering Challenges to resolve

  • Platform train Interface – when trains move into and out of station platforms there are a huge number of complex systems, physical engineering assets and human factors that all have to safely work together.  Systems include – ATO (Automatic Train Opening), CCTV, Scada, train cab controls, Train control systems. Physical assets – platform gauging, security platform screens – Human factors – how train driver reacts, how travellers react.

  • Interaction of the train in operation as it moves from HS2 assets across Network Rail assets – how this displays in the train, possession management, asset management.

  • Toilet Technology – HS2 plans to use novel bio-reactive toilet than a normal toilet system which allows Train Depots to be smaller and simper – however, this will created operational challenges which need to be resolved.

Progression & Development

High Speed Two is a rapidly growing organisation with the opportunities for progression and development truly fantastic.  HS2 already have a superb reputation for progressing from within highlighted by the fact 45% of all vacancies are filled internally.  High Speed Two have embraced a System Approach to delivering such a hugely complex & large programmes of works the opportunities across the organisation within System Engineering, Integration, Engineering Management, Configuration Requirements & Assurance are unrivalled across the industry.

Work Situation – Hybrid

The office location is Birmingham Snowhill or London Euston (your choice) they operate a flexible hybrid working model with plans to be working 2 days a week from the office.  Overall, this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can.
