- JOB PURPOSE
The Innovation Manager is a senior manager position and will be a focal point for the promotion and development of the innovation within HS2. It will include supporting the positioning of Innovation within HS2 and input into HS2’s overall innovation strategy.
The role will be key in influencing, steering and adapting ideas from within the organisation and proactively sourced externally. The role will be accountable for identifying and managing ideas, assessing feasibility and risk of ideas taken from throughout the organisation, stakeholders and suppliers. And ultimately facilitating their implementation.
This is an Innovation delivery role– have you got a track record of delivering innovation projects and making them a reality? Have you got experience liaising with the supply chain and SME’s, prioritising the most effective and deliverable from numerous potential innovations.
ACCOUNTABILITIES- Support the creating and positioning of innovation as a centralised function within HS2;
- Develop, manage and evolve best practice process for innovation management across the programme, involving managing a broad range of innovations, collectively having the potential to deliver 100’s of millions pounds worth of benefits;
- Lead the identification of innovation opportunities and associated ideas from within HS2, the supply chain and wider community.
- Use technical and commercial knowledge to develop and identify key areas where innovation will have the greatest impact, using a variety of innovation methodologies and techniques.
- Engender a culture and climate to support innovation conducive to introducing new ideas and opportunities and ensuring feedback is constructive;
- Lead on the initial assessment of innovative ideas / opportunities identifying those that bring added value against the strategic goals of the project;
- To be a recognised leader in innovation management within the academic and professional innovation community;
- To become a key contact point for innovation both within HS2 and for external organisations, including direct contact with both government bodies and supply chain organisations;
- Liaise and develop processes, tools, protocols and techniques to support and encourage innovation across the project.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE- Minimum of Degree level qualified in technical discipline;
- Chartered Engineer level or other equivalent externally recognised qualification desirable
- Recognised as a leading practitioner in managing the innovation process and landscape in a complex environment;
- Demonstrable capability in driving innovation and fostering change within large scale capital and, or technical programmes;
- Has operated or consulted at all levels within a complex organisation including director and board level;
- Experience of owning and directing a large portfolio of projects across a broad range of technical and commercial areas in a complex safety critical programme
- Demonstrable evidence of effective leadership, communication, influencing and team working;
- Significant expertise in risk management whilst maximising the benefits delivered by innovation;
- Track record of developing and continually improving effective and efficient innovation processes. And providing meaningful guidance and support to colleagues in cross functional disciplines to support ideas through the processes;
- Knowledge of rail, construction, utilities, infrastructure desirable;
- Proven ability to engage with, influence, and manage senior internal and external stakeholders on challenging projects
- Excellent organisation skills and an ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
- An ability to work across a number of disciplines, balancing technical and commercial interests
- Comfortable working with ambiguity whilst being delivery focussed
- The successful candidate will be a dynamic, articulate, a creative thinker, able to develop solutions to problems and able to explain matters clearly to others, whilst maintaining excellent attention to detail.
DECISION MAKING- Jobholder makes decisions with respect to delivery to time, cost and quality, reaching decisions autonomously to deliver objectives
- Jobholder escalates decision making to Head of Innovation on critical matter that impact Strategy delivery
FACTS AND FIGURES- The innovation team is a small central team that sits within the technical directorate but works across the project
- The innovation team is able to impact and influence decisions that will deliver programme wide benefits with potential impact of 100’s of millions of pounds.
- The innovation strategy is made up of a number of interconnecting projects covering innovation capability, directing innovation capacity and engendering a collaborative culture.
- The post will report to the Head of Innovation and will be required to operate across all levels of HS2 and including Department for Transport (DfT) and Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS). The post will also entail significant engagement with outside parties – HS2’s supply chain; academia, Innovate UK, UK Catapult Networks, Knowledge Transfer Network and other thought leaders.
