Unique Senior Structural Engineer Role

Major international engineering contracting firm with a turnover of £4b, who are the market leaders in modern construction techniques such as “Offsite Manufacturing” & BIM. This world renowned innovative company is recruiting for a Senior Structural Engineer to work at Head Office in their Work Winning department reporting directly to the Technical Director of their Technologically advanced pre-cast concrete facility where your role is to devise and shape successful solutions utilising their offsite manufacturing offering on project tenders.

Working within multi-disciplinary Bid Teams on a wide variety of construction and civil engineering projects including some of the largest and technically challenging projects in the world your role is to devise successful engineering solutions. Optioneering solutions that can be built, manufactured and win the tender.

The Senior Structural Engineer (SSE) shall be technically responsible for preparing, checking and approving all structural design calculations associated with the production of precast concrete solutions, utilising the full suite of products and solutions within the manufacturing capability. These solutions will not only be deployed to meet the performance criteria but also with full consideration to design, manufacturing and installation efficiency.

The SSE will perform a lead role in the development of solutions in both work winning environment and where Projects have been secured. In all cases they will ensure that client requirements are thoroughly understood and ensure the design team, where applicable, are fully attuned to designing for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) in line with design guidance and product catalogues. This will include the provision of design technical advice for all stages all phases of projects.

The role holder must have strong influencing skills to bring about desired outcomes with the Consultant and Client Communities.

  • Major infrastructure projects such as: High Speed 2, £600m Northern Line Extension, £850m Thames Tideway, £2 billion Hinkley Point C Point Nuclear New Build, £1 billion Manchester Metro.
  • Building Projects : £800m Manchester Airport, £1bn St James Centre redevelopment, £450m Oxford Shopping Centre, £650m Francis Crick Institute, £300m Dumfries & Galloway Hospital, One Tower Bridge & One Blackfriars.

Key Dimensions:

People Responsibility

Direct: Junior Design Engineers and CAD Detailers

They shall give leadership to the design team and will interface directly with both the design and production team/s. Set targets and objectives; manage the interface of all manufacturing design calculations liaising with external design engineers, temporary works department and internal design team as necessary.

Financial Scope:

Fully understand budget requirement and facilitate maximisation of good design practice and DfMA principles to enable lean design, manufacturing and assembly of products.

Primary Role Responsibilities

  • To make sure all designs are fully compliant at all times with all relevant design and Construction Design & Management Regulations, 2007 (CDM).
  • Interface with structural engineers/CAD engineers having overall responsibility for ensuring that they are fulfilling their own defined job roles.
  • Assist the commercial team to prepare and issue enquiries to external consultants for design detailing packages.
  • Manage relationships with 3rd party designers to understand their current resources, skills, availability and operational issues.
  • Ensure full adherence to all quality control procedures and remain compliant with authorisation and approval processes both internally and externally.
  • Carry out, check and, where authorised approve design documentation.
  • Use engineering judgement to assess activities taking place in the design office and challenge those producing them. Have confidence to stop any work that could lead to unsafe designs or to bad engineering practice, resolving issues to allow the activity to re-commence.
  • Provide value engineering in determining the best solution for engineering problems.
  • Have an understanding of the capabilities and constraints of all manufacturing plants and equipment for the manufacture of rc precast concrete
  • Earn a reputation for innovative engineering expertise and excellence.
  • Fully understand Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles (DFMA), ensuring good knowledge of materials, processes, & manufacturing constraints. A good understanding of associated assembly methods & costs is also required.
  • Work closely with our Design partners to ensure effective development of existing products and introduction of new products.
  • Maintain awareness of ongoing product development and provide input where required to ensure effective development of existing products and introduction of new products.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and technical standards in relation to building and civil engineering structures.
  • Coordinate inter-disciplinary design interfaces between all sections of a project and communicate technical issues between project management, designers and consultants.

  • To help develop and grow a strong engineering design team to support a rapidly growing business unit.
  • Manage continuous improvement and cost effectiveness of the Design for Manufacturing process.
  • Identify personal development needs and ambitions.

Candidate Profile:

  • A structural background is essential.
  • A minimum of 4 years experience in a structural design engineer role.
  • Significant reinforced concrete design and detailing experience essential.
  • Structural finite element model experience required, specifically SCIA
  • Knowledge of 3-D CAD modelling and its principles required.
  • Good understanding of site construction techniques and building design principles.
  • Appreciation of Precast concrete manufacture (Not essential)
  • Knowledge and experience of software for the design and detailing of reinforced concrete.
  • Understanding of Design requirements for Manufacture.
  • Self-motivated and proactive individual capable of leading activity and working under own initiative.
  • Degree-level education; Chartered Structural Engineer or working towards within 24 months.
  • Previous project management experience.
  • Experience dealing with people at all levels of an organisation required.
  • PC-literate, (Various design package experience)
  • People management skills and team oriented.

Construction Offsite Manufacturing is going through somewhat of a revolution, it is the future of construction, the hiring company is the market leaders and continually increasing their use of offsite manufacturing indeed by 2020 70% of what they build will be built off site.

The company is heavily involved in Research and Development via their Engineering Excellence division and they would actively encourage involvement with R&D projects.

Salary Range

£45,000 – 55,000

Car £5000 Car allowance / Executive level car (BWM / Mercedes & Audi)

Pension Stakeholder, contributions – Company puts in 1.5x your contribution up to max of 6%:9%, Family Health Care
