- Description
Functional Integration Engineer – High Speed Two Ltd (HS2)
Location London Euston | Hybrid Working (c.3 Days Office)
Programme HS2 Major Rail Infrastructure Programme 10 – 12yrs
SALARY £65,000 – £70,755 + 12% Pen + Health + 25 Holiday
Progression: Senior Functional Integration Engineer (£75,000 – £83,500 + Package)Cutting-Edge Systems Integration Role – First of its Kind
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join High Speed Two Ltd (HS2) as a Functional Integration Engineer within the central Systems Integration team, part of the Chief Engineer’s organisation.
This is a genuinely unique systems integration role working client-side on one of Europe’s largest and most technically complex infrastructure programmes. The team is responsible for ensuring the future HS2 railway operates as a fully integrated system, coordinating how multiple engineering sub-systems interact operationally across the end-state railway.
The role sits within the Infrastructure Directorate, acting as the Prime Systems Integrator for HS2, responsible for integrating operational, technical and engineering requirements into a safe, efficient and operational railway.
Unlike traditional design engineering positions, this role focuses heavily on systems thinking, problem solving, interface management and operational integration across complex engineering environments.
The Role
You will support the functional integration of complex railway and operational systems including:
- Signalling & command/control systems
- Rolling stock systems
- SCADA & operational control systems
- Engineering management systems
- Stations, telecoms and infrastructure interfaces
Working within the wider systems integration framework, you will analyse how systems communicate, interact and function together operationally, helping define integrated technical solutions across the railway lifecycle from requirements and architecture through to testing, commissioning and operational readiness.
A key part of the role involves analysing operational scenarios and mapping interactions between systems, interfaces, users and operational processes to ensure the railway functions safely and effectively as a complete integrated system.
The team uses systems engineering, modelling and Enterprise Architecture methodologies to manage functionality, interfaces and information flows across the programme.
What They’re Looking For
The team is open to candidates from both rail and non-rail sectors including: Defence, Nuclear, Aviation, Complex infrastructure & Software or hardware systems environments
Rail systems experience is preferred, but transferable experience from other highly regulated, safety-critical or operational environments is strongly welcomed.
This role would suit someone who enjoys solving complex engineering problems, influencing stakeholders and working across multidisciplinary technical environments.
Practical delivery experience is more important than specific software tool expertise. HS2 is looking for engineers who have helped deliver integrated systems, products or software through design into operation, service or live environments.
Key Experience & Skills
- Systems engineering or systems integration experience within complex operational environments
- Understanding of:
- Interface Management
- Requirements Management
- Verification & Validation (V&V)
- Systems Assurance
- Configuration Management
- Testing & Commissioning
- Experience working across multiple interfacing systems or disciplines
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
- Ability to influence stakeholders and communicate technical concepts clearly
- Understanding of operational systems integration and safety-critical environments
- Experience using or exposure to model-based systems engineering tools such as:
- DOORS (or equivalent requirements management tools)
- Enterprise Architect
- UML / SysML / modelling languages
Why Join HS2?
- Unique client-side systems integration role rarely seen in major infrastructure
- Work within the Chief Engineer central engineering function
- Exposure across the full operational railway lifecycle
- Exceptional progression opportunities within Systems Engineering & Integration
- Strong internal development culture with extensive long-term programme security
- Opportunity to work on one of the UK’s most advanced integrated transport systems
- Hybrid working and flexible environment
This is an exceptional opportunity for an engineer wanting to move beyond siloed engineering disciplines into true systems integration and operational railway functionality on one of the world’s most complex infrastructure programmes.
