Birmingham: £85,000 – £92,000 (potential flexibility to £101.5k) + 12% Pension + PackageTechnical Authority for E&B across entire HS2 Programme
This is a rare opportunity to join High Speed Two in a true technical authority role, leading Earthing & Bonding strategy across one of the UK’s most complex rail infrastructure programmes.
As Lead Earthing & Bonding Engineer, you will own the electrical safety strategy across a highly integrated railway environment, ensuring safe grounding, bonding, and electrical continuity across all HS2 contracts (stations, civils & 11 Rail systems contracts).
This is far more than a design assurance role. You will influence programme-wide engineering decisions, shape technical standards, and ensure earthing and bonding risks are effectively managed across major live delivery contracts.
Working client-side, you will collaborate closely with Tier 1 contractors, supply chain partners, utilities, and regulators to ensure safe integration across a 200-mile high-speed railway.
Why This Role Stands Out
- Technical Authority role within a nationally significant infrastructure programme
- Shape electrical safety across complex railway systems and interfaces
- Work across all HS2 contracts & disciplines
- High visibility with senior engineering leadership and external stakeholders
- Long-term programme security with 10+ years of delivery ahead
- Opportunity to influence standards, innovation, and whole-life asset performance
- Hybrid working with strong future progression opportunities
The Role
You will act as the recognised Earthing & Bonding Subject Matter Expert across the programme, leading technical governance and supporting multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver safe, integrated solutions.
You’ll manage complex interfaces between electrical systems, EMC, power distribution, signalling, and infrastructure, ensuring consistency and compliance across all contracts.
Working alongside the Lead EMC Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring both disciplines align to deliver safe and robust railway integration.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop programme-wide Earthing & Bonding strategy aligned with industry standards
- Define technical specifications, guidance, and assurance processes
- Review and challenge contractor designs to ensure compliance and risk mitigation
- Lead technical governance, peer reviews, and engineering assurance activities
- Resolve complex interface challenges across electrical, rail systems, and infrastructure disciplines
- Support systems integration through grounding architecture and bonding strategy
- Interface with utilities, regulators, and external infrastructure operators
- Present technical risks and recommendations to senior leadership
- Mentor engineers and support capability development across the programme
- Influence innovation, value engineering, and whole-life cost optimisation
What We’re Looking For
- Chartered Engineer or equivalent professional status
- Strong expertise in Earthing & Bonding within complex infrastructure environments
- Knowledge of electrical safety, grounding systems, and bonding strategies
- Understanding of relevant standards including BS 7909, IEC 61936, and rail safety frameworks
- Experience across rail, utilities, power, transmission & distribution, or large infrastructure projects
- Ability to manage technical interfaces across multidisciplinary systems
- Strong stakeholder engagement and technical leadership capability
- Experience operating within large, matrix-led organisations
The Opportunity
This is not a traditional engineering role.
It is an opportunity to become the recognised authority for Earthing & Bonding on a landmark infrastructure programme; shaping electrical safety, systems integration, and technical delivery across one of the UK’s most significant transport projects.
