Pivotal Head of Health & Safety role for Main Works civils working on High Speed Two programme responsible for H&S across 4 multibillion pound main works civils contract’s consisting of: 350 sites, over 30,000 workers representing 5m hours worked a month.
Interested in Health & Safety Leaders who have worked in High Hazard & fast paced industries with multisite operations and very complex supply chains such as - Rail, manufacturing, utilities, Civil, aggregates, waste, Power, Nuclear, Aviation, Stations, Infrastructure, complex buildings etc.
This high-impact, visible leadership role reports to HS2’s Health & Safety Director for Construction and directly manages a team of 12–18 H&S professionals.
Your Mission
You will provide strategic health, safety, and security leadership across four multibillion-pound Joint Venture contracts:
- SCS JV: £4.2bn – Euston Tunnels & Approaches, Northolt Tunnels
- Align JV: £1.6bn – Chiltern Tunnels & Colne Valley Viaduct
- EKFB JV: £4bn – 80km from Chilterns to Brackley to Long Itchington
- BBV JV: £6bn – 100km from Long Itchington to Birmingham Spur
You’ll work hand-in-hand with the Main contractors to embed safety culture and performance standards across a vast and complex supply chain – many of whom you’ll influence without direct authority.
Working Situation
This is a visible figure head role where the majority of your week will be from the Sites & HS2 offices located between London & Birmingham – HS2 share site offices with the Joint Venture civils contractors working in integrated project teams. Likely to be 4 days a week from sites & offices. The role will be formally located from London or Birmingham Offices
Head of H&S SALARY
Birmingham £100 – 110,400 + Pen (6:12) + health + 25 days
London £100 - £120,000 + Pen (6:12) + health + 25 days
Duties & Responsibilities
- To be responsible for providing strategic health, safety and environmental management advice and support to leadership and delivery teams.
- To be accountable for providing leadership and overseeing the functional line management of embedded QHSSE Managers within Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) across the 4 main works civils contracts and those that support other development and delivery areas.
- To be responsible for providing support to leadership on the Safe Decision Making and Common Safety Method for Risk evaluation and Assessment (CSM-RA) compliance requirements.
- To be accountable for role modelling and embedding ‘Safe at Heart’ culture and ways of working across development and delivery areas.
- To be responsible for supporting health, safety and security in the design of the Main Works Civils
- To be accountable for validating and approving subcontractor Health, Safety and Security (HSS) Performance (pre-contract award) and support sub-contractor on-boarding.
- To be responsible for facilitating the provision of Health, Safety and Security services to support development and delivery teams.
Required Criteria
We’re seeking an inspirational, chartered H&S leader with a proven track record in high-hazard, fast-paced, multisite industries, such as:- Rail, manufacturing, utilities, Civil, aggregates, waste, Power, Nuclear, Aviation, Infrastructure, complex buildings etc.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Health & Safety Leadership – Leadership across complex supply chains with ability to influence & Steer despite no direct authority of them.
- H&S Technical Expert (SME) - You will be a chartered (or equiv) H&S expert with the technical understanding to manage H&S on such a large programme – including understanding HS2’s risks’ as Principal Designer (CDM)
- Transformational Health & Safety – Be able to demonstrate the ability to Cause the right things to happen’ through embedding the health & Safety culture across organisations and supply chains
- Personal Traits - Confidence, resilience, inspirational and presence to influence senior industry figures.
