- Description
- Are you a Hydrogeologist / Groundwater specialist and interested in working on Europe’s largest infrastructure project – High Speed Two?
A Groundwater Specialist is required to work for the Client Organisation (High Speed Two Ltd) responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK. The role sits within a dedicated Groundwater Team at High Speed Two part of the environment department who ensure HS2 meets all its commitments and obligations relating to Environmental impacts caused by Groundwater & related subjects.
The Groundwater specialist will be working on Phase 1 of the project, which, is valued c£60 billion has 10 years left to run, excellent opportunities for development and being involved in first of its kind work – the Environmental Minimum requirements on this project are the most comprehensive and will become the standard for future major projects in the UK.
Job Purpose
The Groundwater Specialist role is to develop the technical quality, specifications, standards and assurance of groundwater issues (and related subjects) associated with the HS2 programme.
Most of the technical standards have now been specified for Groundwater and so one of the key aspects of the role is to assure the designs and work the joint ventures main contractors produce with regards Groundwater risks on the various HS2 contracts – notably the 4 main works civils contracts (all in excess of multiple billions), which involves huge cuttings, tunnels, viaducts, bridges etc. Once the civils contracts are complete (3-4 years) as well as oversight on Station contracts the successful candidate will take the lead on post construction monitoring ensuring the Groundwater mitigations and assurances given to the Regulatory authorities (Environmental Agency, Local Authorities etc) are effective and carried out as agreed, managing the changes where necessary.
The role has excellent opportunities for future development with one potential development route being Groundwater Manager (paying £70 – 80k).
The Challenge
The key challenge of the role is the assistance the Groundwater specialist gives to the main contractors to help them gain the critical consents & Approvals, literally thousands are required, to allow construction to happen from the various technical authorities most notably the Environment Agency but also local authorities, water authorities, environmental groups etc. This could include assistance on the production of Risk Assessments but also where necessary liaise directly with the statutory bodies to help and ensure the consents & approvals are gained and allow the construction to happen.
Example – a new major cutting runs directly through an aquifer you may need to advise the contractors on appropriate mitigation measures to allow the consents and approvals to be granted.
Work Situation – Hybrid
The office location is Birmingham Snowhill or London Euston (your choice) they operate a flexible hybrid working model with plans to be working 1-2 days a week from the office. Overall, this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can.
