- Description
- Working on the new build of a High-Speed railway project in the UK. The Lead CCS Engineer is responsible for the implementation of the CCS strategy and for leading the development of the technical standards and specifications to which the systems will be designed and constructed. Reporting to the Head of CCS Engineering, the Lead CCS Engineer provides leadership of the CCS engineering tasks and is responsible for the quality of the work. The job holder will be required to engage with programme stakeholders, providing strategic direction for business critical workstreams and providing technical leadership for specialist and consultancy resource.
Managing a team of 2 that includes Senior CCS Engineer & Senior Engineer Traffic management in addition managing a whole series of consultants. The role is in the Infrastructure Directorate (department) which is accountable for specifying requirements that result in an operational railway.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Engaging and managing stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach for development of engineering solutions.
- Providing overall technical assurance for the CCS engineering discipline.
- Working closely with the wider engineering disciplines to develop CCS solutions that consider all relevant systems and sub-systems.
- Developing requirements, specifications and standards which deliver railway capability, while mitigating environmental impacts, within the programme and budget.
- Contributing to the management of technical risk for CCS engineering works.
- Providing technical expertise and advice relating to CCS engineering to the wider project organisation and external stakeholders.
- Developing and leading the implementation of strategies for management of interfaces between CCS and other infrastructure systems, Network Rail and other 3rd party infrastructure.
- Managing work packages and suppliers, as required.
Ability to provide leadership of the CCS Engineering discipline
- Provides specialist technical support and leadership on all discipline-specific scientific, technical and engineering principles to those working directly with project development / delivery teams in area or phase.
- Capable of being a Standard Discipline Owner / Subject Matter Expert for area or phase.
- Provides technical, commercial management and leadership skills to support those working directly with project development / delivery teams in area or phase.
- Ability to communicate most discipline-specific technical ideas to stakeholders and colleagues, based on examples of application.
- Ability to apply the full range of principles relating to standards, safety and the environment.
- Applies principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security; understands the approaches and consequences to data creation, transformation and visualisation and knowing when to seek guidance from other Subject Matter Experts or others.
Knowledge:
- Detailed practical understanding of the application of the Common Safety
- Method (CSM) for risk evaluation and assessment in a CCS project context.
- Thorough understanding of the full scope of Control, Command and Signalling Systems applicable to railways and their relationship to railway operations - high-speed rail projects desirable but not essential
- Application of technical standards, both national and international, which apply to CCS and railway system design and operation.
- Understanding of the technical issues associated with current and future CCS technology
- Chartered Engineer/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.
- Management of interfaces between CCS and other infrastructure systems including Network Rail.
Desired
- Comprehensive understanding of the specific technical issues associated with high-speed rail, the European Train Control System (ETCS) and Automatic Train Operation (ATO).
- Understanding of development, design and construction based on multiple similar CCS Systems projects.
- Understanding of Command Control & Signalling Systems applicable to High Speed Railway
Type of experience:
- Experience of leading small teams of highly skilled, specialist engineers
- Development or delivery of CCS Systems associated with modern railways or similar client organisations.
- Working as part of a multidisciplinary management team within a large, complex project
- Establishment of requirements and evaluation of proposed solutions
- Project planning and organisation to meet significant project deadlines including cost delivery and schedule targets
Salary:
Birmingham £70 - 85,000 + pkg
London £85 - 99,000 + pkg
