Â
The Opportunity
An excellent opportunity has arisen for two Senior Project Managers to join High Speed Two (HS2), working directly for the client on the EKFB Main Works Civils contract.
The vacancies have arisen following the promotion of the existing Senior Project Managers into Head of Delivery positions, providing a genuine and demonstrated progression route.
Reporting to a Head of Delivery, each Senior Project Manager will lead approximately 4–5 Project Managers, with responsibility for around 30km of railway and all major assets within their section, including bridges, viaducts, earthworks, green tunnels, roads and associated infrastructure.
The two positions cover:
- NC2a South – Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
- G2S Greatworth to Southam – Banbury/Southam, Warwickshire
Detailed design is complete, with approximately three years of delivery remaining. The programme is entering a major construction phase before moving through completion, testing, commissioning and handover.
Â
The Role
This is a delivery focused leadership position. You will work closely with EKFB, its supply chain, designers, HS2 teams and external stakeholders to resolve issues, manage interfaces and keep complex construction moving.
- Lead an integrated team of approximately 4–5 Project Managers across your section.
- Take responsibility for delivery of the civil engineering assets within your area.
- Work closely with the main contractor and supply chain to maintain progress and achieve project objectives.
- Challenge contractor performance where required while maintaining a collaborative, solutions focused approach.
- Manage complex interfaces across civils, rail systems, track, utilities, highways and Network Rail.
- Coordinate local authorities, landowners, statutory bodies and community stakeholders.
- Monitor programme, cost, productivity, quality and delivery performance.
- Review and challenge contractor programmes and construction sequencing.
- Identify risks and issues early and drive practical solutions before they impact delivery.
- Ensure works are delivered safely and in accordance with HS2 requirements and CDM obligations.
- Support completion, close out, handover and transition from major civils into railway systems and commissioning.
Â
NC2a South – Aylesbury
The Aylesbury position covers a key section of HS2 forming part of the programme's designated core test area.
Key upcoming works include:
- Completion of the Wendover Green Tunnel and associated construction works.
- Excavation of the Wendover North Cutting through to Nash Lee Lane.
- Completion of the Leather Lane Green Bridge, together with backfilling, landscaping and restoration.
- Interface with track and systems contractors as the section moves towards testing and commissioning.
- Coordination with Network Rail, designers, contractors and wider HS2 teams.
Â
G2S – Greatworth to Southam
The G2S position covers EKFB's northernmost section and some of the most significant structures on this part of the HS2 route.
Key works include:
- Completion of the Chipping Warden and Greatworth Green Tunnels, including the 2.7km Greatworth tunnel.
- Delivery of the 515m Edgcote Viaduct and Oxford Canal Viaduct.
- Delivery of the A423 Banbury Road Bridge and associated approach roads.
- Delivery of Ladbroke Cutting, the deepest cutting on the HS2 route at approximately 32m, together with the B4451 Kineton Road Bridge and Longhole Viaduct.
- The Long Itchington Wood Tunnel and ongoing engagement with local authorities, utilities, landowners and other stakeholders.

What We're Looking For
This is a delivery-led Senior Project Manager role rather than a commercial position. Strong construction and infrastructure knowledge is important, with the emphasis on getting complex projects built.
- Significant project or construction management experience on complex infrastructure programmes.
- Strong civil engineering delivery experience, ideally heavy civils, rail, highways, tunnelling, nuclear or similarly complex environments.
- Experience working under NEC3 and/or NEC4 contracts.
- Strong understanding of construction methodologies, sequencing and programme delivery.
- Ability to review and challenge contractor programmes without needing to be a specialist planner.
- Strong contractor, supplier and stakeholder management experience.
- Experience leading integrated project teams and managing complex interfaces.
- Excellent communication skills with a collaborative and solutions focused approach.
- Understanding of CDM and its application on major construction projects.
- Experience monitoring cost, schedule, productivity and delivery performance.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between project sites.
Â
Why Join HS2?
This is an opportunity to take responsibility for a significant section of one of the UK's most ambitious infrastructure programmes, leading a team of Project Managers and working across major civil engineering works.
With detailed design complete, the focus is now firmly on construction, completion and handover. You will be joining at a stage where your leadership and decision making will have a direct impact on getting the railway built.
The career progression is already demonstrated, with the previous Senior Project Managers moving into Head of Delivery positions.
Beyond the current section, there are further opportunities across HS2, including stations and the wider railway systems programme, with the overall programme extending through to 2039.
Â
Package
£100,000–£111,578 salary, potentially up to £120,000 depending on experience.
12% employer pension contribution.
Private healthcare and 25 days holiday.
Direct employment with High Speed Two Ltd.
Progression opportunity to Head of Delivery – circa £130 – 140k + pkg
If you are an experienced Senior Project Manager who enjoys leading teams, solving complex delivery problems and getting major infrastructure built, this is an opportunity to take your career onto one of the UK's most significant infrastructure programmes.
