- Description
Senior Project Engineer / Snr NEC Supervisor
Location: Central Birmingham – Hybrid working (3 days per week on site/office)
Salary: £85,000 – £92,400 + 12% pension + benefits
Project: £800m Curzon Street Station (8-year delivery programme)Role Overview
We are recruiting a Senior Project Engineer / NEC Supervisor to support the client-side delivery of Curzon Street Station, Birmingham’s new flagship high-speed rail terminus and one of the most significant infrastructure projects currently under construction in the UK.
Curzon Street Station is a landmark, nationally important project and will be the largest building in Birmingham. The station comprises major viaduct structures, large-span construction, and a distinctive 70-metre-wide arched roof, delivered using innovative construction methods and state-of-the-art building systems. It will be the first new intercity terminus station built in Britain since the 19th century.
This role sits client-side, embedded within the delivery team, and is closest aligned to a traditional Resident Engineer / NEC Supervisor position. It is a delivery and quality assurance role, not a design post, focused on ensuring that construction works are built safely, correctly, and in accordance with design intent, specifications, and contractual requirements. Open to Senior Project Engineers, NEC Supervisors, Engineering Manager, Senior Civil Engineers from Client, Consultant or Main Contractor background – must have major infrastructure delivery experience.
The Role
You will be part of a wider engineering function supporting live construction activity, providing engineering oversight, challenge, and technical assurance across both design and construction.
The role requires a strong on-site presence and the confidence to intervene where quality, safety, coordination, compliance, or technical risk is identified.
Approximately 70% of the role will focus on NEC Supervisor duties, including:
- Reviewing contractor submissions, inspection and test plans (ITPs), and compliance evidence
- Responding to technical queries, defects, and non-conformances
- Supporting quality management, assurance checks, and site activities
- Providing engineering input to ensure works are delivered in line with specification and design intent
The remaining time will support broader engineering assurance, including:
- Oversight of how design duties are being discharged
- Principal Designer (CDM) coordination and assurance
- Management of field changes and technical queries
- Interface management between packages and disciplines
- Providing technical support to the wider delivery team
Project Context
Curzon Street Station has recently entered the construction phase, with piling works commenced. The overall build and commissioning programme spans 8 years.
The Principal Contractor is the Mace–Dragados Joint Venture. The first four years will focus on heavy civils, including piling, foundations, viaducts, and major earthworks, followed by MEP installation and architectural fit-out.
The project involves large-scale structures, multiple interfaces, and complex assurance and governance requirements, demanding strong engineering judgement and delivery focus.
Background & Experience
This role is best suited to engineers from a delivery-led background (client, consultant or Main contractor) with experience on major infrastructure projects, such as:
- Rail and stations
- Highways and bridges / viaducts
- Airports
- Power or other large-scale infrastructure
Experience with large reinforced concrete structures, viaducts, or steel-framed buildings (stations, depots, or large-span structures) will be particularly relevant.
You will have experience of:
- Supporting or discharging engineering assurance during live construction
- Working under NEC contracts with a clear understanding of the NEC Supervisor role
- Operating close to site, dealing with real-world construction challenges
- Providing engineering judgement and constructive challenge in complex delivery environments
What Matters Most
- Strong engineering judgement with the confidence to challenge constructively
- Comfortable working face-to-face with contractors and site teams
- A practical, delivery-first mindset, rather than a purely design-led approach
- Focused on ensuring work is built correctly, safely, and efficiently
- Calm and effective in complex, high-profile construction environments
