Looking for 6 Environmental Consultants to work on 3 major contracts on HS2, interested in candidates from general environment, acoustic, carbon, ecology, air quality indeed any environmental background to work as an Environmental Manager on major civil or station contracts. Degree qualified or equiv. and a min of 2 years’ experience excellent opportunity and career development through to Senior Environmental Manager.
The Client organisation who are building and then operating UK’s High Speed Rail network, are looking for 6 Environmental Manager working within the integrated projects teams of one of 2 major civils (BBV or Align) or Station (Curzon Street) contracts reporting to a Senior Environmental Manager. Working on Phase 1 of the project, which, is valued c£60 billion and has 10 years left to run.
Working one of three integrated project teams on HS2 the Environmental Manager are responsible for providing professional and technical support in the assurance of achieving compliance with environmental minimum requirements (Carbon, biodiversity, noise & vibration, air quality etc), design and construction is in accordance with organisational and sponsor requirements and policies, environmental commitments, environmental law and regulations. This role is also responsible for providing guidance on environmental design solutions and ensuring environmental issues and constraints are key considerations in project design.
The Environmental Managers are required on various contracts including £571m Curzon Street Station, £6bn BBV Main Works Civils (Birmingham) & Align Main works civils (Maple Cross). All 3 construction are in construction need people with both design and site exposure.
2 Environmental Manager, Mace Dragados – Birmingham Curzon Steet StationFirst brand new intercity terminus statin built in the Britian since the 19th century. Consists of 7 platforms, a new public space and integrated with an extended tram network. Earthworks, piling & foundations have started – main station construction works start in summer 2024.
2 Environmental Manager Align JV – £1.6bn Main Works Civils Coln Valley Viaduct - Maplecross
Align JV are responsible for the £1.6bn contract C1: 21.6km of high-speed rail infrastructure in a rural environment. This will include a 3.37km viaduct, 16.04km twin-bored tunnel and five vent shafts handling both intervention and tunnel ventilation facilities. Including the 2mile Colne Valley Viaduct which will be the longest railway bridge in the UK, almost a kilometre longer than the Forth Rail Bridge.
2 Environmental Manager BBV JV - £6bn Main Works Civils - Coleshill
The Main Works Civil Contract is the BBV JV (Balfour Beatty, Vinci plc) working on the largest Main Works Civils Contract on HS2, £6bn - 90km line of route consists of 42 Viaducts, 66 bridges, 35 cuttings, 56 culverts, 66 embankments & 4 motor crossings. The scale of the project is huge with one single site on the project, Washwood Heath Depot is currently the largest brown field regeneration in the UK.
Working Relationship – Co-locatedOn both roles the client team are working alongside the main contractor (Co-located) in the same site offices, the role requires individuals with the correct behaviours – collaboration, engagement, stakeholder management skills who are able to drive the best from the relationship, pick up on problems as they arrive and resolve quickly rather than waiting and reviewing once the problem has manifested. The Environmental Manager needs to be proactive lead integration and facilitate change not just sit back assure and review.
Working Situation – HybridThe 6 Environmental Manager roles are site based with the expectation to work 3 days from the site 2 from home – sites are located in Birmingham (Curzon Street), Coleshill (BBV) and Maplecross, Hertfordshire Align JV.

Duties & Responsibilities
- To be responsible for supporting technical assurance through production, checking and submission of assurance evidence for technical stage gates, assuring the design and construction of the assets comply with the technical and sponsor requirements, environmental commitments, environmental law and regulations;
- To be responsible for supporting the Senior Environment Manager in organising, coordinating and undertaking the environment element of the HS2 risk based technical assurance of the works performed and assured by the Integrated Project Teams (IPT );
- To be accountable for Authorising Mandatory Approvals: by assuring that contractor designs and construction works are undertaken in accordance with the Environmental Minimum Requirements (EMRs), with particular emphasis on the General Principles and the CoCP. (note - client assures consistency of application);
- To be accountable for managing and communicating HS2 Environment & Sustainability requirements to the Integrated Project Teams’ contractor;
- To be responsible for providing guidance for environmental design solutions for the asset and ensure that environmental issues and constraints are key considerations in project design;
- To be accountable for supporting the Senior Environment Manager with internal and external reporting of environmental matters;
- To be responsible for liaising with technical stakeholders via various forums at local, regional and national levels and the local community on sensitive issues;
- To be accountable for working alongside other technical specialists to develop appropriate and cost balanced mitigation strategies and solutions.
Require CriteriaThe role requires a Degree (or equivalent) Environmental Consultant, Advisor, Manager or indeed Graduate ready for the next step up (min 2 years post grad experience) – could be from any Environmental specialism – Environmental generalist, acoustics, ecology, carbon, air quality, contaminated land specialists etc. Open to a range of backgrounds due to large project team with lots of different specialisms with the opportunity to learn and use their combined knowledge.
Will ideally have some site experience and understand how to deal with contractors, sub consultants (supply chain) on site and contractual circumstances.
Candidates for the 4 Environmental Managers for the 2 Main works civils contracts will have some infrastructure, rail, utilities, civils experience (or something similar).
Candidates for the 2 Environmental Managers for the new build of Birmingham Curzon Street Station will be from a construction (structural), residential, BREEAM, infrastructure, airports, rail etc backgrounds.
Have understanding and experience of EIA’s and or Environmental Minimum Requirements. knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, policy, processes and best practice.
The candidates can be from client, consultant or indeed main contractor and have the correct behaviors to manage the unique structure of the project (co-located in the same offices) – Collaborative, open communicator, proactive & Integrator. In addition candidates must be excellent communicators with the confidence to communicate & manage the supply chain often more experienced thank yourself.

- Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to HS2 – most notably Environmental Impact Assessments and the associated Environment Minimum Requirement on HS2.
- Commercial awareness including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.
