Description
A PRAM Engineer (Performance, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability) is required to work directly for the client organisation who is responsible for building and operating the UK’s New High Speed Rail Network, the role reports to the Lead PRAM Engineer joining a specialist PRAM Engineering team of 4 work are working within HS2’s Lifecycle Integration Team which is all within the System Integration Department who are working on Phase 1 of the project (Birmingham to London). 
 
Future of HS2 & Phase 1
Phase 1 of the project, which, is valued c£50 billion has 10 years left to run and the PRAM Engineer will be there to check the system level Performance, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability right the way through the life cycle of the project from Design, Construction through to Test and commissioning and so this is a very safe long term role with excellent opportunities for progression within the wider system integration department.
 
Overview of Role:
The PRAM Engineer (Performance, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability) provides the support to HS2 in delivering an end-state railway that meets the PRAM system level requirements. The role will facilitate the development of PRAM requirements across HS2 ensuring that each part of the organisation is coordinated to deliver its elements of PRAM as part of an integrated HS2 railway.
 
Amongst over sponsor requirements a Key objective is to deliver a system with trains no later than 30 seconds on average – this is a bench mark of a world class railway.
 
Dimensions & Complexity of Role
Working across all the contracts on the project (main works civils, stations & Rail Systems)
  • Makes decisions with respect to planning, prioritising and delivering tasks associated with the development of PRAM requirements for self and others.
  • Make recommendations to governance panels on the best technical, cost-effective solution to meet HS2 requirements
  • Assuring the Suppliers (Contractors) RAM plans and analysis.
  • Redesign PRAM system architecture because of new requirements due to emerging issues or changes to the programme.
 
Working Situation
The office location is either London, Euston or Birmingham they operate a flexible hybrid working model working 2 day in the office - 3 from home.  Overall, this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can.
Salaries
London (pref)    £60 – 68,000 + pen (6:12) + 25 hols
Birmingham       £60 – 64,000 + pen (6:12) + 25 hols
 
Duties & Responsibilities
 
  • Work with the Senior PRAM Engineer to support the strategic approach throughout HS2 on PRAM, working with all part of the organisation to ensure that suitable resources, tools and process are in place for this.
  • Making use of appropriate analysis tools for PRAM, the role will define the multi-disciplinary requirements, interfaces and technical solutions for each function and capability. The role will be accountable for facilitating the disaggregation of the PRAM requirements into delivery organisation and contract works information so that there are clear obligation for delivery.
  • The role will be accountable for supporting the tracking of the progress of delivery of PRAM through-out the lifecycle, undertaking System Level Reviews (SLRs) and where necessary escalating where progress is not on track.
  • In the testing, commissioning and in-service phase of any contract the role will support on the collection of PRAM information through the deployment of DRACAS and FRACAS to measure reliability growth and advice the delivery organisation on suitable corrective action.
  • The role will work closely with technical specialists in engineering, operations and maintenance and system-safety to ensure that the development and delivery of PRAM requirements is fully coordinated;
  • You will be expected to actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work, and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
 
 
Candidate Criteria
 
Looking for a RAMS Engineer with rail experience (ideally rail systems experience), and knowledge of the Rail RAMS Standard – BS EN 50126 - Railway Applications. The Specification and Demonstration of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS)
 
Ideally be a qualified engineer (chartered or nearing chartership) with a Systems level understanding and project experience that includes the later half of the project lifecycle - detailed design and testing and commissioning, the majority of the requirements have been defined and specified.  Open to client, consultant, rolling stock or rail system product background.
 
Experience working on or interacting with governance review panels would be useful.  Also awareness of RAMS software such as Availability workbench and requirements software Doors would be useful.
 
Good communication and stakeholder management skills are a most to effective communicate and influence teams within HS2 and with the external contracting teams.
 
Skills
  • Able to provide specialist technical support and leadership on discipline-specific scientific, technical and engineering principles to project development / delivery teams, but knowing when to seek further guidance from other Subject Matter Expert or others.
  • Capable of being supporting the Standard Owner, working under the guidance of the Standard Discipline Owner.
  • Able to support project development / delivery teams, working under supervision of line manager (or delegate) with technical or commercial management considerations
  • Ability to communicate most discipline-specific technical ideas to colleagues, based largely on examples of application.
  • Ability to many principles relating to standards, safety and the environment and able to articulate the rest.
  • Applies principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security; understands the approaches and consequences to data creation, transformation and visualisation and knowing when to seek guidance from other Subject Matter Experts or others.
 
Knowledge:
  • Applicable UK construction regulations including CDM requirements.
  • The application of the Common Safety Method (CSM) for risk evaluation and assessment.
  • Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to HS2
  • Commercial awareness including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements.
  • Knowledge restricted to own discipline
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.
