- Senior Configuration Manager & Configuration Manager is required working within the Client Organisation responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK this is a multi-billion-pound high-speed railway to directly link the city centres of: London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. Working within the Chief Engineers, Central Engineering ground within High Speed Two who mange Configuration across all of HS2’s large delivery contracts – Stations, Civils, Rail Systems & Rolling Stock.
The Senior Configuration Manager - To manage change to technical requirements and technical baselines across HS2 supplier contracts (large delivery contracts – stations, civils, rail systems, rolling stock). To manage the verification and validation of evidence submitted by the respective contracts and their Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) that sets out how those changes have been implemented and configured within the contracts. To be the point of contact for Configuration management related issues within delegated engineering area.
Configuration Manager - To manage and coordinate change to technical requirements and technical baselines across HS2 construction contracts. To progressively verify and validate the evidence submitted by the respective contracts and their IPTs that sets out how those changes have been implemented and configured within the contracts.
Effectively the Senior Configuration Manager is similar to the Configuration Manager, however, is a leadership role with more responsibility.
The Senior Configuration Managers reports to the Head of Configuration Manager working within the Central Engineering function (Chief Engineers Group). The Senior Configuration Manager role is a management position and will be responsible for a small team (2/3) of Configuration Managers and Configuration Controllers, providing technical change and configuration management support across a series of designated engineering delivery contracts on High Speed Two.
The Senior Configuration Manager will decide on the following:
- Acceptance of contractor Configuration Management Plans and Processes.
- Direct reports work allocation.
- Contract baseline readiness for approval.
- Approval of leave, expenses, etc for direct reports (line management)
The Configuration Manager will decide:
- Advise on the suitability and completeness of Requirements,specification and scope. Challenge Requirements where deemednecessary.
- Review and respond to stakeholders (internal and external) configuration management queries
- Provide recommendations to change and decision panel on technical scope development.
- Decide work commitments and priorities on a weekly basis.
Working Situation – Hybrid
Role is based from Birmingham or London (Euston) coupled with Hybrid working – There is a flexible hybrid working model working 2 days a week from the office. Overall this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can.

Duties and Responsibilities
- To ensure consistent application of configuration and change control processes across respective delivery contracts.
- Line Manage a small team of Configuration Managers within respective delivery areas.
- To manage the implementation of change to technical requirements and technical baselines across the respective delivery contracts.
- To ensure the relevant approved technical change and configuration management processes are instructed to the respective delivery contract areas by HS2.
- To manage Baselines and updates/release of baselines for HS2 and supply chain use.
- Oversee Maintenance of Configuration Status Reports (CSRs) submission from the supply chain.
- To feed into CM function reporting on KPIs
- To feed into data-based reporting on IPT adherence to the technical change and configuration management processes.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders and third parties in managing the configuration of technical requirements/artifacts within respective contract areas.
- To support engineers and environmentalists working to provide evidence and satisfaction arguments in the importance and ultimate purpose of configuration management.
Looking for Candidates
Looking for an Engineering Configuration Manager or Configuration Engineer who have worked within Rail, Infrastructure, Defense, Aerospace, Nuclear any complex engineering sector, however, not IT. Will have strong stakeholder management skills as the changes will affect many different departments within HS2.
Senior Configuration Manager will have leadership experience and or have led a major programme or work stream.
Skills:
- Competent in digital data and information analysis and trend reporting
- Quantitatively and qualitatively assess the performance of delivery organisations against objective requirements
- Ability to work with subject matter experts.
- Ability to review results and work with stakeholders to gain agreement on resultant issues.

Knowledge:
- Knowledge of configuration management practices, techniques, standards, principles, theories, and concepts.
- Knowledge of verification and validation methods.
- Knowledge of working within a government contract environment
Type of Experience:
- Experience of managing Configuration Management and the oversight and implementation of assurance processes for CM on infrastructural projects.
- Experience of liaising with contractors and designers.
- Experience of multi-discipline, cross functional programmes.
- Experience of providing specialist advice to support others and acting as point of contact for CM issues within respective delivery contract areas.
- Experience of direct line management.
- Experience of engaging with senior and junior level members of a business and being able to bring them along on the CM journey,
