- Looking for a Project Manager from a civil / infrastructure delivery background to work for High Speed Two who are building and then operating UK’s High Speed Rail network, working within the delivery infrastructure directorate you will be responsible for the successful delivery of the £300m slab track contract. This is a modular system where the concrete slab track will be manufactured offsite before being transported and fitted on site. Please note rail experience not essential.
As the Project Manager for Slab Track delivery at HS2 you will be responsible for the successful delivery of the £300m NEC contract to time, budget, scope and quality. You will manage detailed design, mobilisation and delivery of the Phase One. Reporting to a Senior Project Manager you will be responsible for the successful delivery for the Rail Systems Slab Track Contract value c£300m. The contract has been awarded to Porr UK ltd and aggregate Industries. The contract is to design and manufacture modular track system for the High Speed Two project – Using a modular construction system known as Slab Track Austria, the concrete slab track will be manufactured offsite at a new purpose-built factory in Somerset before being transported to site. Once installed, the rails are then fitted onto the slab track.
Reporting to a Senior Project Manager you will be expected to work independently and be the named Project Manager for the £300m NEC contract. High Seed 2 are a lean light touch client where the contractors manage self-assuring contracts, they take a risk-based approach where high risk activities are given the main scrutiny – The Project Management team will review and assure submissions – ensuring safety, quality, programme and budget (safeguarding taxpayers money). Working alongside the Porr consortium in a collaborative Integrated Project Team (IPT).
Looking for Project Managers with:
- Experience working on major civil / infrastructure projects - £50m + could be on Rail, Highways, Infrastructure, Nuclear, Structures etc – any civil engineering major project.
- Will have experience with NEC Contracts
- Delivery experience – Detailed Design and Construction phase.
- Open to candidates from Client, Contractor (Tier 1) or consultant background
Work Situation
The office location is London, Euston, they operate a flexible hybrid working model working 2 days a week from the office. Overall this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can. Please note a number of other London offices also available.

Duties & Responsibilities
- To be responsible for providing project management support to one or more of the Rail Systems Senior Project Managers / Heads of Delivery for their allocated project.
- To be responsible for supporting in the successful delivery of Railway Systems objectives outcomes.
- Interface with relevant Railway Systems stakeholders, for their particular project, as required
- To support the monitoring of the change generated from both the Construction/Delivery teams is appropriately managed; including scope changes and cost changes that impact on the affordability of the project, escalating issues to the Senior Project / Project Manager as required

- To support robust reporting on the progression of their project deliverables to the Senior Project Manager/ Head of Delivery and more broadly within the Railway systems programme at any required forums / panels, on a routine and ad hoc basis.
- To support the Senior Project Manager / Head of Delivery for ensuring that project plans are developed, maintained and analysed in order to identify and mitigate delivery risks
- To support the Senior Project Manager / Head of Delivery in identifying and ensuring that appropriate mitigating actions are implemented to address potential milestone slippages and escalating issues as required
- To be activity involved in the integrated HS2 team, including matrixed team members and any agency staff or consultants, providing day to day co-ordinating to deliver project and / or contract requirements to the agreed schedule.
- To manage the package contractor(s) to ensure successful delivery of the project to time, budget, scope and quality.
- To ensure the project is successfully integrated with other related HS2 and Network Rail projects.
- To undertake the duties of the Project Manager under an NEC3 contract.
- Actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work, and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
CANDIDATE CRITERIA
Looking for Project Manager with Major project delivery (infrastructure) experience. The candidates can be from client, consultant or indeed main contractor experience, have NEC contract experience & have been responsible for major programmes and have the correct behaviours to manage the unique structure of the project (co-located in the same offices). Open to Project Managers from Rail, Infrastructure, Highways, Structures, Nuclear – Rail is useful but not essential.
This is not for a Project Manager who wants to be in control of every last detail (self-assuring contracts)- nor is it for a Project Manager who will stand back and review and assure submissions, The candidate will have to be able to judge when to step in provide engineering solutions, manage safety proactively and bring out the best in the Integrated Project Team in a collaborative way.
Skills:
Project management - the ability to develop, plan and integrate projects to optimise target costs and project benefits.
Problem solving – identifying problems and reviewing related information to manage the development and evaluation of options and the implementation of solutions. This includes the management and planning of multiple workstreams, considering the competing demands of stakeholders, cost, time and quality.
Decision quality – identifying the necessary information, managing the gathering and synthesising of that information, facilitating the identification of options and the application of judgement based on logic and reason.
Clear direction - analysing inputs, assessing data, defining strategies and documenting supporting rationales.
Influencing and negotiating skills – including internal functions and external supply chain partners.
Knowledge:
Project Management knowledge aligned to the level of APM Project Manager.
Understanding of risk identification and management.
Understanding of project schedule management, dependencies and risk assessment.
Understanding of the complexities of delivering projects with multiple interfaces.
Degree level qualification or equivalent NVQ in project management, engineering, commercial management or the equivalent experience.
Major infrastructure project experience £50m +, open to Rail, Highways, Nuclear, Infrastructure, Power, Structures etc.
Knowledge of administering NEC Contracts.
Type of experience:
