- Engineering Manager / Senior Project Engineer is required for initial six-month contract to work within the Client Organisation responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK this is a multi-billion-pound high-speed railway to directly link the city centres of: London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. Contract extensions highly lightly. Working for HS2 you will be responsible for overseeing the construction of either a 3km construction of Post Tension Segmented Viaduct or 16km of TBM tunnelling in addition numerous cross passages. There is 1 position but open to Engineering Managers from Structures/Viaduct (Bridge) background or an Engineering Manager from a Tunnelling background.
The Senior Project Engineer is responsible to execute legal and contractual technical duties on project engineering issues within the Integrated Project Team (IPT), leading risk-based assurance of asset design and construction, assuring that it is in accordance with HS2’s technical requirements, standards and policies including CDM, in a timely and cost efficient manner.
High Speed 2 are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to work as Senior Project Engineer working on the Civil Engineering Main Works Contract Lot C1 on Phase 1 – the JV team responsible for this section (Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick). C1 package located from Maple Cross consists of 21.6km of high-speed rail infrastructure in a rural environment. This will include a landmark Post Tension Segmented 3.37km RC viaduct and 16.04km twin-bored tunnel and five vent shafts. The contract is in construction (Delivery) phase and will involve ensuring and assuring the design & construction meets the requirements, quality, CDM,, solving technical problems.
Key Experience
Looking for an Engineering Manager with either major Tunnelling or major Structures (Bridge/Viaduct) experience and has delivery / Construction experience. Working within a fully integrated project team this is a Senior Technical role we are looking for problem solvers who have a track record of delivering on major multidisciplinary projects. The role is working for the client (HS2) and so assurance and process is important, however, we a looking for someone who is able to solve problems and get this complex project built working in a collaborative relationship with the contracting team.
Working Relationship – Co-located & Hybrid
The client team are working alongside the main contractor (Co-located) in the same site offices, the role requires individuals with the correct behaviours – collaboration, engagement, stakeholder management skills who are able to drive the best from the relationship, pick up on problems as they arrive and resolve quickly rather than waiting and reviewing once the problem has manifested.
Role is site office based from Maples Cross site offices coupled with Hybrid working – expectation is to work 3 days a week from the site office and the rest of the time at home.

Duties and responsibilities
- To lead the risk based engineering technical assurance within the IPT, as per the HS2 assurance requirements, through engineering review, checking and submission of assurance evidence for technical stage gates;
- To assure that the design and construction of assets comply with the technical and sponsor requirements and applicable standards, specifications and procedures by supporting planned Technical Assurance Reviews and “spot-checks” of Contractor’s deliverables;
- To discharge the duties of NEC3 Supervisor and Principal Designer (CDM Regulations 2015) Representative as directed by Head of Engineering and Environment.
- To support Head of Engineering and Environment with internal and external reporting and risk identification and mitigation of engineering matters;
- To represent the Head of Engineering and Environment as requested in matters relating to CDM Principal Designer, NEC3 Supervisor or any other technical duty.
- Manage and communicate HS2 Engineering requirements to the IPT contractor;
- Provide guidance on design solutions for the asset, promoting use of best practice and innovative engineering techniques, technologies and processes, driving consistency and identifying opportunities for efficiencies within the IPT
- Work alongside Heads of Commercial and Project Clients to determine the impact of trends, progress and change with respect to cost and schedule.
- Work alongside other technical specialists, engineers and environmentalists to identify and develop appropriate and cost balanced mitigation strategies and solutions, contributing to successful system integration between station, railway systems and other delivery contracts
- To assure the technical coordination and integration of the supply contracts with other neighbouring contracts, station contracts, railway systems contracts and others.
- To be the discipline engineer in technical areas for which they have the recognised technical competence.

Candidate Criteria
Looking for a qualified Engineer, ideally chartered (but experience the key) with experience working as Engineering Manager on major multi-disciplinary complex infrastructure projects ideally within Rail, Highways, Viaduct or Tunnelling . The Senior P.E will either be tasked with the RC Viaduct or Tunnelling section (depending on their background), however, an appreciation of rail systems would be helpful and must have experience on the delivery stage of a project & CDM. Must have strong stakeholder engagement skills ability to work in a collaborative co-located project team whilst navigating a complex matrix environment. Open to client, consultancy or Main Contractor background – a mix being the ideal.

- Technical Leadership - Specialist technical support and leadership on most discipline-specific scientific, technical and engineering principles but, knowing when to seek further guidance from Subject Matter Expert or others

Knowledge:
- Applicable UK construction regulations including CDM requirements.
- Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to HS2
- Commercial awareness including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements.
- Chartered Engineer/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.
Type of experience:
- Experience in managing multi-disciplinary engineering and safety standards, activity on large complex major projects/ programmes within a complex infrastructure delivery programme.
- Experience of managing competing project and engineering demands, with cost and schedule implications.
- Experience working on major Tunnelling Projects (TBM, Cross passages) or Major Bridge / Viaduct projects.
