2 Environmental Manager is required to work within the Client Organisation responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK this is a multi-billion-pound high-speed railway to directly link the city centres of: London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester.
 
Working in the integrated project teams on the Environmental Manager is responsible for providing professional and technical support in the assurance of achieving compliance with environmental minimum requirements, design and construction is in accordance with organisational and sponsor requirements and policies, environmental commitments, environmental law and regulations. This role is also responsible for providing guidance on environmental design solutions and ensuring environmental issues and constraints are key considerations in project design.

Environmental Manager – Milton Keynes/Aylesbury EFKB

This is a site focused Environment Manager role coupled with Hybrid working based within the Integrated Client / Main Contractor Delivery team EFKB (Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall) based from Milton Keyes & Aylesbury working on a major £4 billion civil engineering main works contract. EFKB (Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall).  EFKB will deliver 80km section of the new high speed rail link between the Chiltern Tunnel and Long Itchington Wood. The scope of the works includees 15 viaducts, 6.9km of green tunnels, 22km of road diversions, 81 bridges and around 30 million cubic metres of excavation. 

The Initial focus will be Assuring Designs -  environmental reviews, verifying, auditing processes, assuring detailed Design works in preparation for construction although there will also be elements of Consents & Construction within the role.  Working within the Environmental Leadership group your role is verification of work done and assuring and ensuring strategic business critical elements such as ‘No net loss’, ‘Carbon Reduction’, ‘Biodiversity Net Gain’ etc, which. Are all set out in the Environmental Minimum Requirements for the programme as determined by the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) are adhered to. As we go through the year the role will involve more and more construction with the role turning almost all delivery/construction in 2024.
 
Environmental Manager – Old Oak Common Station
 
This requires an Environmental Manager with Construction / delivery experience.
 
Site Focused Environmental Manager working within the Integrated Client / Main Contractor Delivery Team BBV (Balfour Beatty, Vinci, Systra) based from the Old Oak Common Station site, project valued £1.6bn Brand New station build, 6 underground platforms & 8 Surface platforms.  On completion, Old Oak Common station will become the UK’s best-connected station, providing direct services to three major airports, eight of Britain’s ten largest cities and forming part of one of Britain’s largest regeneration projects.  The role will focus on delivery / construction – assuring the works carried out by the Main Contractors and their supply Chain. In the first 6 months they will also ask you to cover some works on the £2bn Euston Staiton.

 
Working Relationship – Co-located
On both roles the client team are working alongside the main contractor (Co-located) in the same site offices, the role requires individuals with the correct behaviours – collaboration, engagement, stakeholder management skills who are able to drive the best from the relationship, pick up on problems as they arrive and resolve quickly rather than waiting and reviewing once the problem has manifested.  The Environmental Manager needs to be proactive lead integration and facilitate change not just sit back assure and review.

Working Situation – Hybrid
EKFB role is site office based from Milton Keynes/Aylesbury coupled with Hybrid working – expectation is to work 2 days a week from the site office and the rest of the time at home.  
 
Old Oak Common role is site based from old Oak Common Station (Ealing) with Hybrid working – expectation is to work 2 days a week from the site office and the rest of the time at home.  

 
Salary  
Milton Kelynes/Aylesbury          £48 – 54,000 + Pen (6:12) + health + 25 hols
Old Oak Common (Ealine)         £50 – 58,000 + Pen (6:12) + health + 25 hols
           
Duties & Responsibilities

  • To be responsible for supporting technical assurance through production, checking and submission of assurance evidence for technical stage gates, assuring the design and construction of the assets comply with the technical and sponsor requirements, environmental commitments, environmental law and regulations;
  • To be responsible for supporting the Senior Environment Manager in organising, coordinating and undertaking the environment element of the HS2 risk based technical assurance of the works performed and assured by the Integrated Project Teams (IPT );
  • To be accountable for Authorising Mandatory Approvals: by assuring that contractor designs and construction works are undertaken in accordance with the Environmental Minimum Requirements (EMRs), with particular emphasis on the General Principles and the CoCP. (note - client assures consistency of application);
  • To be accountable for managing and communicating HS2 Environment & Sustainability requirements to the Integrated Project Teams’ contractor;
  • To be responsible for providing guidance for environmental design solutions for the asset and ensure that environmental issues and constraints are key considerations in project design;
  • To be accountable for supporting the Senior Environment Manager with internal and external reporting of environmental matters;
  • To be responsible for liaising with technical stakeholders via various forums at local, regional and national levels and the local community on sensitive issues;
  • To be accountable for working alongside other technical specialists to develop appropriate and cost balanced mitigation strategies and solutions.
 
Require Criteria
The role requires anEnvironmental Manageror Advisor ready for the next step up- experience on major infrastructure / construction/ utility projects.  Have knowledge and experience of EIA’s and Environmental Minimum Requirements.  Excellent knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, policy, processes and best practice.  The candidates can be from client, consultant or indeed main contractorand have the correct behaviors to manage the unique structure of the project (co-located in the same offices) – Collaborative, open communicator, proactive & Integrator.
Please note the role at Old Oak Common the applicants must have Delivery/Construction Environmental experience could be from any background – building, civils, rail, utilities, rail etc.
The role for the main works civils would suit linear new build, infrastructure experience – rail, highways, roads, utilities etc.

  • Decision Making - Ability to gather and synthesise information, identify
  • options and apply judgement based on logic and reason and make use of a variety of analytical approaches to provide relevant information to suppliers, stakeholders and decision makers using key facts and data.
  • Technical Leadership - Specialist technical support and leadership on all discipline-specific scientific, technical and environmental principles but, knowing when to seek further guidance from Subject Matter Expert or others.

  • Communication - Ability to communicate many discipline-specific technical ideas to colleagues, based on a mix of training and examples of application.

Knowledge:

  • Applicable UK environmental law and other relevant construction (including CDM ) regulations.
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, policy and best practice.
  • Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to HS2 – most notably Environmental Impact Assessments and the associated Environment Minimum Requirement on HS2.
  • Commercial awareness including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.

  • Experience in managing standards, engineering and environmental activity on large complex major projects/programmes
  • Experience of managing competing project, engineering and environmental demands, with cost and schedule implications
