- Systems Engineer - Technical Risk Manager is required working within the Client Organisation responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK this is a multi-billion-pound high-speed railway to directly link the city centres of: London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. The role is working within the Chief Engineer’s group (central engineering department) on the project within a Prime Systems Integrator team where you will actively manage HS2’s technical risks for system integration.
Job overview
Working within the Prime System Integrator team reporting to the Senior System Design Manager the role is to actively manage HS2’s technical risks for system integration; assumptions, issues and dependencies (RAID) on a system level, encompassing all aspects of the identification, planning, monitoring, analysing and treatment of the RAID process.
The focus of the role is understanding of railway operations and maintenance and engineered sub systems principally the higher risk areas – railway systems, rolling stock, stations in particular and how they typically integrate and interface.

Work Situation – Hybrid
The office location is London, Euston OR Birmingham and they operate a flexible hybrid working model working 4/5 days a fortnight from the office - so 2 /3 days a week. Overall, this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can.
Salary
Birmingham £50,000 – 55,000 + Pen(6:12) + 25 days Hol (mid-point £52,152)
London £55,000 – 60,000 + Pen(6:12) + 25 days Hol (mid-point £56,)
Duties & Responsibilities
Proactively manage and report on technical risks for systems integration which includes:
- Technically challenge the RAID items that are identified programme wide (the scope includes Rail System, Stations, Civils etc.) to ensure that entries are valid, not in conflict with other entries and have detailed (time bound) mitigation plans in place. This includes the coordination of management and engineering actions to mitigate and resolve RAID items.
- Moderate and level the RAID log to ensure the programme level risk appetite and tolerance is consistently applied.
- Engaging with all part of the HS2 programme (top to bottom) to detect and manage how the HS2 system design is impacted by RAID.
- Develop and produce metrics and dashboards, tailored into reports to various stakeholders within the HS2 organisation such as to enable risk-informed decision making and drive required management interventions.
- Validate and sifting of Prime System Integrator and top-level risks, and develop in-depth mitigation plans for each risk or issue in conjunction with the owner; allowing the planning / prioritising of efforts and activities to progressively mitigate risks going forwards.
- Assure RAID items have been managed appropriately to the level required to support progression of HS2’s procurement activities (tender/award).
- Own the RAID process and tool and drive continuous improvement working closely with users and HS2 IT to ensure the tool remains fit for purpose and the process integrates into the wider suite of management plans.
- Promote and communicate the RAID process and tool to ensure active and lasting engagement programme wide.
Candidate Criteria
Ideally looking for a Systems Engineer with Railway experience, ideally Railway Systems integration experience (S&T, E&P, Pway etc). Rail experience is essential for the role, however, would consider a discipline engineer, Project Engineer, who has a System Engineering way of thinking and broadly understands both the Sub System and importantly the System view and the V-life cycle. You will have a broad/basic understanding of requirements /V&V, System Assurance, Configuration. The candidate will have experience on rail multi-disciplinary projects managing integration across disciplines and understand Risk principles.

- Ability to provide specialist technical support and leadership to project development / delivery teams, but knowing when to seek further guidance from other Subject Matter Expert or others

Knowledge:
- Understanding of railway operations and maintenance and engineered sub-systems (i.e., railway systems, rolling stock, stations in particular) and how they typically integrate and interface.
- Understanding of systems engineering techniques and awareness of other specialist disciplines, such as requirements/V&V management, system assurance, configuration management.
- Understanding of risk management principles
Type of Experience:
- Experience of managing competing project and engineering demands, with cost and schedule implications.
- Applicable UK construction regulations including CDM requirements.
- Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to HS2.
- The application of the Common Safety Method (CSM) for risk evaluation and assessment
