- Job Purpose
As a Climate Change Specialist working for the client organisation on the UK's High Speed Rail project you will be providing specialist technical support on climate change adaption & resilience management for all phases of the project. You will work in collaboration with the supply chain and your colleagues to ensure project commitments relating to climate changeare delivered and timescales are met with value for money at the forefront of all decisions. The role will include working with a wide range of stakeholders including contractors and government decision and policy makers.
The Climate Change Specialist is a wide-ranging role with influence across the entire programme (Phase 1, Phase 2a & Phase 2b) providing specialist technical support on Climate change adaption & Resilience management – working on technical reviews for the Hybrid Bills (Environmental Impact Assessments), specifying climate change procedures, policy & processes, ensuring & assuring the supply chain to ensure climate change deliverables & requirements are met.
What makes this role truly ground-breaking is that much of the policies and processes being development on the programme will become the industry standard for future infrastructure projects.
Working Situation
Due to the pandemic the role is initially based from home and then will be either London (Euston) or Birmingham based. This is a flexible employer, and there will be an element of flexible working on offer.
Salaries
London £55,000 - £60,000 pen (6:12) + 25 hols
Birmingham £50 – 55,000 + pen (6:12) + 25 hols
Duties & Responsibilities- Support the Climate Change Manager in development and implementation of climate change adaption & resilience Management Requirements.
- Develop and implement procedures, tools and systems as appropriate to ensure climate change requirements are clearly defined and well understood and to enable effective and efficient delivery of climate change adaption & resilience objectives.
- Provide technical assessment and reviews for the hybrid bills and associated tasks, including Environment Statements, Petitioner responses and Parliamentary Queries.
- Work with Phase One, Phase Two and Systems Delivery in providing support and specialist climate change management and reduction expertise.
- Participate in the Environment team’s wider objectives and work closely with them to achieve climate change objectives.
- Provide technical assessment and review to assure that deliverables meet the project’s climate change Requirements.
- Represent HS2 at climate change technical meetings with stakeholders as required.
- Engage pro- actively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Work with Phase One, Phase Two and Systems Delivery to ensure consistency of approach, promote best practice, innovation and valuefor money
- Continue to develop professionally, maintaining technical competencies and identifying opportunities for learning new skills in order to meet work objectives more effectively.
- Actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work, and support and comply with all organizational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
Required criteria
The Climate Change specialist will have experience within the built environment whether that’s from working on infrastructure or indeed construction projects. They will be technically proficient with a working understanding of the Climate Change Standards. The candidate will likely be working for an environmental consultancy or client organisation and have experience influencing climate Change resilience & Adaptations during design phases. They will also have experience specifying climate change standards and or writing processes.
Skills:
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical specialists, non- technical project managers and technical stakeholders.
- Ability to technically assess and review climate change management deliverables submitted by contractors
- Be able to review parliamentary submissions as part of the hybrid Bill & petitioning process.
- The ability to provide technical responses to Parliamentary Questions and Freedom of Information requests.
Knowledge:
- Suitable qualifications to degree standard, or experience and education to demonstrate a good understanding of climate change adaption & resilience principles
- Knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislation, technical guidance, industry standards and best practice in relation to climate change adaption & resilience.
- Memberships of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and understanding of the relevant legislation, technical guidance, industry standards and best practice in relation climate change adaption & resilience.
Type of experience:
- Experience of implementing climate change adaption & resilienceprinciples within complex and medium to high risk projects
- Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience of delivering successful outcomes with complex stakeholders
- Experience of working with subject matter experts relevant to the role, including contractors and consultants.
