- Seeking a Project Manager working on a High Speed Rail Project, the new multi-billion-pound high-speed railway to directly link the city centres of: London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. The Project Manager will be working on the Birmingham Interchange Station £300 - £400m and the people carrier £200m and will undertake NEC3 Project Manager duties. The Project Manager will be responsible for managing the Supplier contract on behalf of the Project Client and Senior Project Managers, working effectively and collaboratively internally and with the Supply Chain resource in the Integrated Project Team (IPT) to fulfil clearly defined HS2 accountabilities which enable efficient delivery of assigned scope of the Integrated Project Team (IPT) to agreed budget, time and quality parameters.
The Project Manager reports to a Senior Project Manager and sits within the Construction Directorate and the Stations Client Directorate and will focus on Station construction activities at Interchange Station c £500 / £600m. The contract is currenting in procurement stage with the winner to be announced in 12 months. The contract has early contractor involvement so there will be an opportunity to create efficiencies – value engineering so looking for an engineering project manger who understand how projects are built.
There are multiple interfaces on the project – argent (development corporation), Birmingham Airport, main works, Rail systems and so require someone who has managed multiple interfaces on a project this could include Railway Stations, transport hub, Airport, hospitals etc
The Ideal candidatewill be a qualified engineer with main contractor experience and have a background in providing innovative construction solutions (value engineering) and would of worked on projects with multiple interfaces (station, airport, transport hub, hospital) and in addition have good contractual awareness using NEC3/4.
Salary & Location
Salary £65 – 72,000 + Pen (6:12). Please note excellent opportunities for future progression Senior PM salaries another £10/15k.
The role is based is Birmingham, Snowhill and will move on site Birmingham Airport when ready. Although initially will be based from home due to the pandemic followed by a hybrid model until the pandemic has ended.
Please note no travel to work costs (the commute), car allowance or subsistence is paid.
Duties & Responsibilities
- To be responsible for fulfilling the duties and obligations of the NEC3 Project Manager on behalf of the Project Client and the Senior Project Manager.
- To be responsible for supporting the Senior Project Manager in effectively and efficiently managing the construction contracts within an Integrated Project Team.
- To be responsible for supporting the Senior Project Manager in establishing, monitoring and managing delivery of consistent contract management, including identification of emergent or systemic problems, leading to resolution.
- To be responsible for managing and monitoring contract performance.
- To review and accept programme schedule.
- To be responsible for supporting the Senior Project Manager in proactively managing risks within the Integrated Project Team scope and support the mitigation of programme level risks.
- To be responsible for the Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM) duties as delegated by the Client Representative.
- To be responsible for supporting a collaborative culture which enables high performance by encouraging innovation and knowledge sharing between as the client, other Integrated Project Teams and the supply chain within Integrated Project Teams.
- To be responsible for creating an integrated partnership with our supply chain, empowering, enabling and facilitating.

Skills:
- Project Management - the ability to plan and integrate projects to deliver target costs, dependencies, risk management and project benefits. Skills profile aligned to APM Project Manager (intermediate).
- Problem Solving – the ability to identify problems and review related information to assist in the development and evaluation of options and the implementation of solutions, including the ability to manage and plan workstreams, considering the competing demands of stakeholders, cost, time and quality.
- Decision Making – the ability to manage the gathering and synthesising of necessary information to assist in the identification of options and the application of judgement based on logic and reason.
- Analysis - the ability to analyse inputs, assess data in order to assist in the development of strategies and document supporting rationales.
- Influencing & Negotiating – the ability to influence and negotiate with internal functions and external supply chain partners.
- Building Relationships – ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and suppliers to resolve emergent risk situations.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of the project management knowledge aligned to the level of APM Project Manager (intermediate)
- Understanding of the nature of the relevant contract structures and the application of appropriate contract and supplier performance systems.
- Understanding of risk identification and management
- Understanding of project schedule management, dependencies and risk assessment
Type of experience:
- Experience of the entire project lifecycle including planning, procuring, developing and implementing similar project activities.
- Experience of leading, managing people and working across functions and disciplines to deliver objectives
- Qualification in project management, engineering, commercial management or the equivalent experience.
