Job Overview
To provide professional and technical support on fire engineering issues, supporting development of standards and technical requirements, and providing assurance regarding safety and functionality of relevant assets, in order to meet HS2’s obligations as the Statutory Undertakers and the project’s requirements for technical functionality.
Reporting to the head of Fire Engineering the Senior Fire Engineer makes decisions with respect to planning, prioritising and delivering Stations, tunnel, building and infrastructure fire engineering work. You will also provide requirements and guidance for construction fire safety.
 
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Support development of strategy, requirements, specification and standards across the project for fire engineering design, including evacuation, compartmentation, detection and alarm systems, fire extinguishing devices and systems;
  • Provide technical expertise and advice relating to fire engineering to both the wider organisation, and external stakeholders as required;
  • Support in providing technical assurance for fire engineering discipline including safety arguments and technical files to demonstrate compliance to current fire safety legislation identified standards;
  • Support management of interfaces of fire systems and other infrastructure systems;
  • Support Qualitative Design Review (QDR) process, detailing specific fire prevention and protection issues and requirements;
  • Development of risk assessments in accordance with the Regulatory Reform order;
  • Support the delivery of effective Fire and Rescue Service liaison and engagement for all stages of the project (design, construction, operational);
  • Engage and consult as appropriate with internal teams impacted by fire engineering design, particularly Infrastructure Management, Railway Systems, Technical Directorates, the asset project and contract management teams;
  • Assist in preparation of Emergency Plans and planning and execution of Live Exercises;
  • Maintain expert knowledge of fire engineering, fire life safety and remain abreast of legislative requirements and how standards and best practice support their application;

The Successful Candidate
Skills:
  • Capable of being the Fire Standard Owner, working under the guidance of the Standard Discipline Owner.
  • Able to provide specialist technical support and leadership on discipline-specific analysis, problem solving and design techniques to project development / delivery teams but knowing when to seek further guidance from other Subject Matter Expert.
  • Able to provide technical, commercial management and leadership skills to support project development / delivery teams, working under supervision of line manager (or delegate).
  • Ability to communicate discipline-specific technical ideas to colleagues, based largely on examples of application.
  • Ability to apply many principles relating to standards, safety and the environment and able to articulate the rest.
  • Applies principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security; understands the approaches and consequences to data creation, transformation and visualisation and knowing when to seek guidance from Subject Matter Expert.
 
Knowledge:
  • Appropriate scientific, technical for fire engineering principles
  • Able to review and select appropriate techniques, procedures and methods to undertake tasks.
  • Understanding of measurement and research techniques used to identify the source or root cause of a problem or issue.
  • Understanding of promoting quality and contributing to best practice method of continuous improvement.
 
Type of experience:
  • Experience of applying fire technical standards in major infrastructure environment – Rail, heavy civils
  • Experience capturing business requirements and translating into data and system solutions.
  • Experience of driving business benefit through improved process and use of data.
