- As Lead Configuration and Control Manager at HS2 you will lead on assuring the configuration management of the technical design and associated systems. Working within the Specification & Technical Assurance Team(System Engineering Team) you will be responsible for developing robust requirements and integration and assurance frameworks that can provide an excellent level of configuration control.
The High Speed 2 project is the new multi-billion-pound high-speed railway to directly link the city centres of: London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester completing in 2033.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The role reports into the Director of Specification and Technical Assurance in HS2 who sits within the Specification & Technical Assurance Team (System Engineering Team) in the Infrastructure Directorate.

2 direct reports (configuration managers) and also will act as Evangelist for Configuration Management within HS2
ROLE OF DIRECTORATE/DEPARTMENT
The Specification and Technical Assurance team sits within Infrastructure Directorate - the project’s Technical Design Authority, its assurer and guardian of design quality and the system level integrator of the railway. S&TA works closely with the HS2 Corporate Sponsor function (under CFO), the Technical teams and the wider HS2 Programme to manage scope, specifications and baselines. The department’s core objective is to ensure the Development Agreement and DfT Sponsors Requirements are discharged into clear specifications that are subsequently complied with. In simple terms, this means ensuring the Sponsor receives what the Sponsor has asked for.
ACCOUNTABILITIES- Develop design configuration management plans to manage the integration of the design between technical leads and suppliers and ensure the effective implementation of these plans for the Technical Directorate.
- Establish and maintain procedures, competence levels and systems in order to ensure a robust approach for integration assurance management within by the project.
- Provide training on HS2 configuration management processes and requirements to the HS2 team and suppliers to ensure appropriate practices are followed for project success.
- Engage with the wider HS2 Ltd assurance activity to achieve the delivery of an efficient and effective companywide configuration management system.
- Ensure effective configuration control of the design activities and the data contained within diverse HS2 data management systems including BIM, enterprise Bridge and specific technical tools such as DOORS, TRAIL and asset management;
- Engage with the Technical and Delivery teams to define the configuration activities and criteria for design approval.
- Demonstrate through validation and verification activities that the configuration of the design, physical implementation of equipment and operations are compliant with consistent baselines.
- Lead configuration management reviews, collating evidence and providing progress reports demonstrating the configuration control across the programme to specified baselines.
- Qualified to degree/HND Level (or similar) in relevant subject.
- Demonstrable expertise in configuration management of complex systems in major projects.
- Demonstrable ability in client management of major projects and working with sponsors, regulatory bodies and other major stakeholders.
- Demonstrable ability to deliver work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Chartered Engineer or equivalent.
- Knowledge of the rail, construction and utility industries including their requirements and assurance needs.
- Civil design and construction experience.
- Experience in software development and integration of IT systems.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- Likely to be a System Engineer and configuration specialist with experience of Asset Management and BIM (Building Information Management) understanding.
- Resilient, confident, leader with excellent communication skills who is able to ‘sell’ Configuration Management to HS2 - whom as an organisation is somewhat inexperienced to system engineering and in particular configuration management
DECISION MAKING
The role has budget authority and will be expected to deputise for the Head of Specification
and Assurance where required.
SALARIES
From London the role offers: £90 - 100,000 + pkg
From Birmingham £80 - 87,500 + pkg
