- Description
- Project Manager working on the EWC (Early Works Contract/ Enabling Works) on High Speed 2 which consists of upwards of £1bn worth of works across the route of Phase 1 (London to Birmingham). The Project Manager role will be managing works within the Chilterns Section at 26km of route which is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with protected habitats and places of SSi (Special Scientific Interest). The role is based from offices in Maple Cross, Rickmansworth and typically spend 4 days in the office and 1 on site. You will be involved in presenting to the public and key stakeholders progress and specialist initiatives.
The works are wide and varied with the Project Manager responsible for numerous contracts ranging in value from £100k - £14m – this could include heavy piling works for the TBM enabling works, ecology works, ground investigations, road works & traffic management, utility diversions, Over Headlines, site set up. The contracts will be based on the NEC3 and the projects are prone to changes in size and scope.
As a Project Manager at HS2 you will deliver assigned projects successfully through the management of the client, the supply chain and other stakeholders, aiding in the design, vision and strategy for the delivery for the infrastructure programme to ensure delivery according to time, cost, quality, safety & environmental specifications.
The role reports into a Senior Project Manager and is wide in its scope with real autonomy – the role requires an experienced individual who is able to drive the programme with minimal supervision.
After 2 years of working on the Early works contract you will most likely move to the main heavy civil contracts.
About the role:
- Direct and manage area projects from broad programme strategy to delivery and handover as directed by the Senior Project Manager and the Project Director.
- Support the Senior Project Manager to deliver projects to meet control budgets, key milestones, and time, cost quality and safety targets in line with programme plans
- Negotiate, procure and authorise all relevant project contracts and variations, and approve and authorise all payments to meet value for money criteria
- Lead interfaces with all external and internal stakeholders relating to projects managed
- Manage the integration of works across the boundaries of other interfacing projects.
- Support the Senior Project Manager by reporting project progress, including progress reports and papers, to the Contract Board, Programme Board, and other similar boards
- Oversee the risk management for projects managed and take the lead on audits and independent reviews undertaken by other parties
- Provide direct input to communications, press and media for internal and external stakeholders by collaborating with the communications directorate
- Establish and maintain relationships with key customers, including contractors, and key stakeholders in order to enable quick resolution of issues
- Actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work. Support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
Qualifications
About You:
- Degree/HNC in Civil engineering (or equivalent)
- Recognised professional Project Management qualification
- Knowledge of NEC3 Contracts and CDM regs
- Proven track record of project management; designs and construction of bridges, viaducts and heavy civils gained within an infrastructure environment.
- Experience of leading teams or colleagues across matrix working environments
- Experience of working on multiple ‘enabling works’ contracts – utility diversions, road works, ecological works, ground investigations, Over Head Lines, Piling works, archaeological where the applicant has held budget, planning and programme responsibility during construction/delivery phase of the project. The candidate could of worked on enabling works for another large infrastructure project – highway, railway, power station, tunnel, bridge or could be involved in major utility divisions, water works.
- With exposure to the "client side" although would consider people from both the client and a Tier 1 main contractor, experienced in Earned Value and utilising it through project progress reviews, including cost;
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills to bring on board various and sometimes conflicting stakeholder requirements – including presentations (community and stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to engage with, influence, and manage operational level internal and external stakeholders on contentious projects.
- A background of practical project management skills; experience in project management tools and techniques to integrate, manage and report on cost, schedule, risk, quality and Health and Safety across internal teams and the supply chain;
- Excellent organisation skills and a proven ability to work under pressure and meet multiple deadlines.
