Major international infrastructure group with a turnover in excess of £8 billion have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Civil Design Engineer to join their Rail Engineering Technology Services Team (ETS) based from offices in Redhill, surrey. Their Rail Engineering Technology team is an internal design consultancy working on a variety of rail environments & projects– Network Rail, LUL, Crossrail, light-rail & HS2. Working on a wide mix of civil / rail projects that have been awarded to the group. Reporting directly to an Engineering Manager you will have responsibility for your own workload managing design engineers and graduates.
What you'll be doing
Role Scope:
- Undertake the design of complex structural renewal and maintenance projects from inception to design completion, this includes bridge works, stations, UTX, off track civils, Civils signalling works, gantries, civils OHL to name a few.
- Undertaking structures assessments, managing the delivery of site investigations / surveying and planning, and checking the work of others.
- Prepare and review technical reports and draft specifications for remedial and improvement works.
- Prepare calculations, drawings, technical specifications, and technical reports to support the design, assessment, survey or investigation carried out as determined by the nature of the tasks given.
- Manage site investigations, surveys and undertake desk top studies in order to prepare technical reports on the condition / capacity of existing structures.
- Undertake detailed design and prepare supporting documentation including drawings, technical workscopes, and risk assessments.
- Undertake structure inspection, assessment and preparation of reports
- Identify technical resources required to deliver aspects of a Project, supervise implementation of the work and undertake appropriate checking of the work as required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce sufficient packages delivered to programme and budget
- Make sure packages comply with good design practice, relevant technical, professional and group standards
- Produce accurate packages with minimum of rework
- Provide accurate and complete records
- Produce successful audits
- To mentor staff and review Technical Competency.
- Direct technical staff engaged in design and assessment works, carry out checks of calculations and technical reports prepared by others and undertake such work personally.
- Manage the delivery of technical projects, or parts thereof, allocated providing monthly update of progress for client report.
- Accept full financial, site investigation, survey, design, assessment and programming responsibilities for the implementation of projects allocated.
- Oversee the development of all design and construction contracts to ensure compliance with required standards as well as current safety legislation.
Who they are looking for:
Knowledge and Experience:
- Must have a recognised degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. Candidates should be professionally registered with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer and working towards Membership of the I.C.E.
- HNC only acceptable when coupled with a minimum of 5 years of experience in design and / or construction with the emphasis on railway structure design and maintenance.
- Appreciation of construction methods and materials
- Must have a good working knowledge of Group Standards / Health and Safety legislation, including CDM regulations, and how it impacts on the industry.
- Knowledge of engineering drawing practices
- Should be competent in CAD and familiar with Structure Analysis package (STAADpro or similar)
- Experience in railway based civil engineering and structures
