- Description
- Are you a Senior QS ready to make the step to Commercial Manager, working within the rapidly growing offsite manufacturing sector working for a company who produces and installs large precast concrete multi-storey buildings. Project include – Hotels, apartment blacks, student accommodation, car parks even sporting stadiums. This is a hugely exciting business unit with a rapidly expanding order book where buildings of over 20 stories are built and individual contracts valued up to £25m.
My client is the UK’s largest manufacturer and supplier of precast concrete solutions. 70-year-old business with a turnover in excess of £220m, and whom employ 1500 people across 12 UK based precast facilities. This is a forward-thinking company that heavily invest in both technology and their employees.
Overview of Role
The Commercial Manager will report into a General Manager and will look to develop their own team and supervisor and mentor 2 Assistant QS and be commercially responsible for all contracts/projects within the multi-storey structures division. You will be skilled in contract negotiation and ideally have experience of both JCT and NEC contracts.

The current General Manager of the multi-storey building division is also from a commercial background and so
Projects
Projects consists of multi-storey precast buildings and structures, working within the concrete buildings and architectural facades division. Typical projects include multi-storey buildings, often associated with residential/student/hotel accommodation also stadia, carparks, schools etc. Notable projects include London 2012 Olympic Aquatic Centre, a new stand at Aston Villa Football Club and a 22-storey high hotel.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Measurement and Bill of Quantities preparation.
- Preparation, submission & agreement of interim and final valuations.
- Preparation of interim and final cost reports.
- Preparation and agreement of variation and Compensation Event claims.
- Developing supply chain relationships.
- Issuing sub-contract documents and material enquiries.
- Agreement of sub-contractor & supplier measurements & accounts.
- Reviewing contract documents to identify project risk and opportunity.
- Supervision of Junior QS personnel.
- Liaison with designers on Design and Build Contracts, ensuring that the most cost-efficient design options are considered.
- Value engineering, challenging and reviewing design for practicality, buildability and cost efficiency.
Candidate Profile
This is a forward-looking company who recognises and rewards effort and initiative. The successful candidates will possess strong communication skills, will be highly motivated, and will be commercially and contractually aware with a good knowledge of construction processes. Experience in the Civil Engineering or Construction side of the construction industry ideally with main contractor experience with a degree or HNC Quantity Surveying or relates subject.
- Degree or HNC in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or building
- Contract Negotiation experience and ideally have knowledge of both NEC and JCT forms of contract
- Ideally with experience working for a main contract (civil or build)
- Excellent computer skills with a good knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Ability to work on own initiative, but understand level of responsibility within the team
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to interact with a wide range of people including clients, sub-contractors & consultants.
- Ability to prioritise work and manage a number of tasks concurrently.

- Hold a valid driving license
