The construction industry is seeing rapid changes both in terms if digitalisation (BIM) and looking for more efficient, safer and less wasteful methods of construction such as Offsite Manufacturing – making Precast both a growing sector of the construction industry but also in the cutting edge of Lean construction and future innovations.
I am looking for a Senior Structural Engineering working for theUK’s largest manufacturer and supplier of precast concrete solutions. 70-year-old business with a turnover of £220m, and whom employ 1500 people across 12 UK based precast facilities. This is a forward-thinking company that heavily invest in both technology and their employees. The Senior Engineer will be ‘Technical Manager’ working in their North West, Cheshire facility which produces Superstructures. Superstructures largely consist of designing precast panels to construct multi-storey rooms buildings (hotels/Student accommodation, stadia, commercial build, car parks etc). Reporting to the Chief Engineer the successful candidate will be Technical lead for Superstructures with CAD technicians and graduate engineers reporting into them. They are looking for a Structural Engineer who has at least 5 years relevant RC Concrete design experience, however, this role would suit an experienced Senior Structural Engineer and able to work from first principals, pre-cast experience although desirable not essential.
The role of the Technical Department is to engage with external clients and their consultants during tender stage to develop precast building schemes. During the design stage, the role will also require liaison with our external consultants, and subsequently with the factory production department, providing technical and structural input during the various stages of scheme development. The Technical Department engages with all divisions of the company, providing technical and structural input in support of existing products and new product development.
Role Accountabilities & Key Responsibilities:
- At tender stage, production of structural concept designs associated with precast panel
- products, for various building types, including multi-storey buildings.
- Development of structural schemes, with due regard to client and statutory requirements, and
- production methodology.
- Liaising with Internal and External Clients, Contractors and Consultants.
- Supervision of other members of staff.
- Ensuring work output conforms to specifications and Standard/Code requirements.
- Providing design office support to production departments.
- Assist with drawing queries from estimating & commercial staff on technical matters
- regarding product use and manufacture.
- Managing the design function and external liaison on specific projects and maintaining
- project records.
- Keeping up-to-date technically and applying new knowledge to the job.
- Carry out any other reasonable request made by line manager to support departmental or
- company objectives.
Person Profile
The role requires the person to be a highly motivated individual with initiative, self-confidence, excellent communications skills, flexibility and adaptability, with the drive and ability to work under their own direction or within a small team of professionals. Be keen to develop their individual capability and that of the team. Lead by example, in terms of behaviour.
Ideally, a Chartered or near Chartered Engineer with experience of RC concrete design with precast experience being an advantage (although not essential).
Essential
- HNC, HND/BEng, BSc or similar level qualification in Civil/Structural Engineering
- Significant experience of Design and detailing of structures in reinforced concrete
- Experience of reinforced concrete design in a civil engineering environment with Superstructures experience
- Minimum 5 years relevant work experience
- Ability to work on own initiative, but understand level of responsibility within the team
- Good time management skills, with ability to prioritise work and manage a number of tasks concurrently
- Knowledge of Eurocodes
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to interact with a wide range of people including clients, contractors, consultants, and production operatives
- Be highly motivated
- Experience in AutoCAD
- Mentoring of less experienced engineers
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Hold a valid driving license
Desirable
- Previous experience of working in Precast Concrete manufacturing environment
- Design of structures in prestressed and/or precast concrete
- Knowledge of Structural Analysis and modelling packages, eg SCIA, Robot, Tekla, Revit
- Corporate membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers
Salary
Paying £50 – 65 + pkg (includes car allowance & bonus) based from Byley, Cheshire factory. Role will include some travel.
