- Senior CDM Principal Designer is required to work for the Client Organisation (High Speed Two) responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK this is a multi-billion-pound high-speed railway to directly link the city centres of: London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. The role will work on primarily on Phase 1, London to Birmingham, but will have responsibilities across all phases of this huge project, superb opportunity to be part of this landmark project
Reporting to the Lead CDM Principal Designer, this role is responsible for providing Principal Designer coordination and assurance across Construction supporting the Engineering Directors and Heads of Engineering and Environment in fulfilling their duties as Principal Designer Representatives within Phase 1. This is right across Phase 1 and included 4 Main Civil Contracts, 3 Station Contracts and 16 Rail System Contracts.
High Speed Two Ltd are the Principal Designers on the project and therefore have a legal duty to discharge the duty of the Principal Designers which includes CDM. The Senior CDM Principal Designer will assure and ensure HS2 ltd are fulfilling / discharging their legal duties – are the correct internal processes in place and are they being followed. The Two fundamental parts of this role are:
- Checking of Processes & Procedures – are they robust, sound, develop and improve procedures (Continuous Improvement)
- Measure the organisation – matrix reports, measuring risk, identify gaps
Due to the sheer size and complexity of the project some of the technical assurance duties such as compiling Heath & Safety files have also been made the responsibilities of the Tier 1 Main Contractors on the project. It will also be the responsibility for the Senior CDM Principal Designer to ensure and assurance the main contractors are fulfilling their duties.
Successful Candidate
The successful Candidate will be a Chartered Engineer or Health & Safety Professional who has been responsible for CDM coordination on a major infrastructure project either in similar role or as Engineering Manager (Project Engineering) or equivalent. Ideally would have client experience with CDM Principal Design responsibility, although contractor experience considered.
Work Situation – Hybrid
The office location is Birmingham Snowhill (preferred) or London Euston they operate a flexible hybrid working model with plans to be working 4/5 days a fortnight from the office - so 2 /3 days a week. Overall this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can.
Senior CDM Principal Designer Coordinator
Birmingham (Pref location) £65 – 75,000 + Pen (6:12) + 25 hols (mid-point £71,170)
London Euston £75 – 80,760 + Pen (6:12) + 25 hols
Duties & Responsibilities
- To coordinate the Principal Designer Representatives across Phase 1;
- To assure that the duties of the Principal Designer Representative as mandated within the CDM Regulations 2015 are being discharged across Phase 1;
- To provide consistent support to the Lead Senior Project Engineer – Principal Designer Coordination and the Principal Designer Representatives across Phase 1 providing standard processes and templates;
- Report periodically on Principal Designer activities including digital metrics.
- Raise concerns and issues to the Lead Senior Project Engineer – Principal Designer Coordination and the (Integrate Project Teams based) Heads of Engineering and Environment in a timely manner
The Successful Candidate
Chartered Engineer or Health & Safety Professional who has been responsible for CDM coordination on a major infrastructure project either in similar role (Principla Designer, CDM Coordinator) or as Engineering Manager (Project Engineering) or equivalent. Ideally will have worked for a client who had CDM Principal Design responsibility at Principal Designer, although contractor experience considered.
Skills:
- Complex problem solving – identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. This includes the management and planning of multiple workstreams and the competing demands of stakeholders
- Decision Quality - Gathering and synthesising information, identifying options and applying sound judgement based on logic and reason, making use of a variety of analytical approaches to provide relevant information to suppliers, stakeholders and decision makers using key facts and data
- The ability to provide technical support and leadership on discipline-specific analysis, problem solving and design techniques
- The ability to confidently communicate some discipline-specific technical ideas to stakeholders and colleagues, based on examples of application.
- Technical Leadership - Applies principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security; understands the approaches and consequences to data creation, transformation and visualisation and knowing when to seek guidance from Subject Matter Expert
- Technical skills – ability to apply digital engineering to HS2 Principal Designer duties.
- Applicable UK construction regulations including UK Construction Design Management legislation
- Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to HS2
- Commercial awareness including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements.
- Chartered Engineer/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.
Type of experience:
- Experience in managing multi-disciplinary engineering and safety standards, activity on large complex major projects/ programmes within a complex infrastructure delivery programme
- Experience of managing competing project and engineering demands, with cost and schedule implications
- Experience of working with Construction Design Management legislation and the Principal Designers duties.
